Opening Reception for Architects as Artists and Panel Discussion on Downtown Redevelopment. The opening reception for Architects as Artists on January 10th, 2008 brings the art and academic communities together to discuss the vision of our city's downtown within an architectural context. The event is 5:30-8:30pm and includes a panel discussion facilitated by city planner, Nan Laurence, on architecture and downtown development. Other panelists include Robert Oshatz, Mayor Kitty Piercy, UO Architecture faculty, Don Genasci, and Brad Malsin from Beam Development.
The new exhibits, Architects as Artists, open on the 10th as well, and feature the work of internationally renowned architect, Robert H. Oshatz,, alongside historical and recent images of downtown architecture from the city of Eugene, selected work of downtown proposals from UO architecture students, and artwork by local, working architects. The exhibit is sponsored by Wiswall & Walsh and runs through March 1st, 2008. See Gallery Exhibits page for details about this block buster exhibit.
Artist Salon Features Do's and Don'ts. Working with galleries is high on the list for artists, so why not join the January Salon when Dena Brown (Director for the Airport Gallery and Maude Kerns) will be sharing the "dos and do NOTs" of approaching galleries. She will talk about the initial introduction to a gallery, proper submissions, how and when to follow up, some insider info on what galleries DO NOT want to deal with, and more. This salon is an excellent opportunity for new and veteran artists to hone their skills and gain new ones. Cost: $3 Public/Free for members.
DIVA Volunteer Exhibit Training Set. We are very busy at DIVA preparing for our major exhibit on architecture, Architects as Artists and opens on Thursday, January 10th. This month's volunteer training will be on Wednesday the 9th at 5:30pm. This training will focus on the new exhibits, and I highly recommend it for gallery hosts so you feel comfortable talking about the exhibits and answering visitors' questions. Let Becky Guy know if you will be attending volunteer@divanow.org .
Whether you come to the training or not, you all are invited to the special opening reception the following evening, Thursday the 10th from 5:30pm-8:30pm. Not only is it a reception for the new exhibits, but the evening will include a panel discussion about downtown development from an architectural lens. The panel will be facilitated by Nan Laurence, a Eugene city planner. Other panelists include Mayor Kitty Piercy; Robert Oshatz, architect; Brad Malsin, Beam Development; and Don Genasci, UO Architecture Faculty.

Oregon Community Foundation Grant Received. DIVA's Executive Director Mary Unruh holds a check from the Oregon Community Foundation that provides a one-year grant to the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts.
The $35,000 grant will support staff development, bringing DIVA’s three part-time staff to full time. This will allow DIVA to meet the expanding market for the visual arts in downtown Eugene.
DIVA, a multi-use arts facility located on the corner of Broadway and Olive in Eugene, has been serving the arts community for four years with quality exhibits, multi-media and film events, artist services and art classes.
Mayor Kitty Piercy joined DIVA’s board and the OCF on December 4th to celebrate this significant vote of confidence in the work DIVA is doing to help make downtown Eugene a vibrant and economically viable destination for visual art activities.
