Lloyd Kaufman To Teach Workshop at DIVA. New York based Troma Entertainment's Co-founder and President Lloyd Kaufman will offer a two-hour workshop on indie filmmaking at 3 pm on February 2nd. This informative two hour course will cover everything an up-and coming filmmaker must know to get their dream projects off the ground. Students will leave the course with dozens of creative and practical tips that are invaluable to aspiring filmmakers.
In the late 1960’s, Kaufman was enrolled at Yale University (where he would later teach multiple Filmmaking Master Classes), diligently working on a respectable degree in Chinese Studies. However, Kaufman was destined for other things. As he explains in his hit book All I Need To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger (published by Penguin Putnam), "At Yale I was placed in a dormitory room with two film fanatics, and I knew everything had irrevocably changed." In fact, Kaufman was infected with a love of movies from which he never recovered.
Kaufman has been an honored guest at various international film festivals and Troma retrospectives around the world. The San Sebastian Film Festival, the British Film Institute, the Cinematheque Francaise, the American Cinematheque, the Chicago International Film Festival, the UCLA Film Archives, the Tokyo Film Festival, and the Shanghai International Film Festival are just a few of the venues to have showered Kaufman with praise and free booze. In 2003, Kaufman received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fantasy Film Festival of Amsterdam. For more information access Lloyd Kaufman web site. Workshop fee: $10 at the door. DIVA Board Member Eric Stillwell to Share Star Trek Adventure. Many in Eugene know DIVA Board Member Eric Stillwell for his recent work on the West Broadway Advisory Committee. But, before moving to Eugene, Eric was recognized for involvement in the Hollywood television and film industry. You will find his career discussed online at Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet where he is perhaps best known internationally for his work on Star Trek projects.
Eric will share his Star Trek experiences on Friday, February 8th, when screens the "Yesterday's Enterprise" episode he co-wrote for Star Trek The Next Geneneration. Then, on Saturday, Eric and Lolita Fatjo, script coordinators for STNG, will be joined by Mary Conley who worked with them at Paramount Studios to present an informational workshop on writing for Sci-Fi television. The panel will take participants behind the scenes of one of Hollywood's most successful franchises and explore the issues of writing science fiction for television. For full particulars visit the DIVA Event Calendar web site.
According to the Internet Movie Data Base, "Stillwell served as Script Coordinator for the feature film Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1992), and was also a production associate on Star Trek: Voyager (1995-1996). During his tenure with the Star Trek franchise, Eric co-wrote the TNG story for the highly acclaimed episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" (1989) which garnered three Emmy nominations, and co-wrote the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Prime Factors" (1994) which was nominated for a Sci-Fi Universe Award."
DIVA Board President Looks Ahead to 2008. In traditional Chinese culture 2008 is the Year of the Rat. I have a feeling this bodes well for DIVA as the letters "RAT"can easily be rearraigned into the word "ART."
Indeed, 2008 started out with a bang for DIVA. Our first opening for the year was a Town & Gown event that took a look at Art and the Downtown. The exhibit fits right in with DIVA's mission of revitalizing Downtown through the visual arts. The Thursday night opening included a standing room only discussion with a highly distinguished panel. We estimated over 200 participants despite a Duck Basketball game and dreary weather.
The Media Arts Committee followed a few days later with a very successful "OpenLens Festival" bringing into the center over 270 patrons. My 2 sons attended one of the sessions on their own, with out any encouragement from me. A true testament that DIVA is reaching the younger generations as well as serving the traditional arts crowd. All this in the first week with most of the year left to go.
Our programming and exhibits intend to inspire and spark conversation. Check our calendar often and come down and join us. Better yet become a member and support our efforts. If you really want to get involved stop by and talk to us about volunteer opportunities and be part of the "YEAR OF THE ART." Randy Stender, DIVA Board President.

First Friday ArtWalk Stop #2 DIVA. The overarching theme of DIVA's exhibition this month is architecture. The artwork in Deborah Heal's exhibit The Great House is featured in the Member's Gallery. Influenced by her experiences living in Santa Fe, she shows paintings inspired by the vistas, colors, and shapes of the landscapes of northern New Mexico. Deborah Heal thinks of artistic potential as a great house. Just as rooms in a house are decorated differently, Deborah Heal strives to explore the different styles and functions of art in her own work.
DIVA February Art Workshops. Three workshops are scheduled for February at the Center. The two part Tooning Around workshop with Matt Paden is scheduled 6-8pm on February 6th and 13th. The cartooning workshops cover the basics of cartooning including body shapes, facial features, and conveying action. Marianne Walker's Copic Marker Rendering workshop covers choosing papers, inking, marker color theory, blending, techniques & special effects, as well as using mixed media. The 12:30 - 2pm February 23rd workshop is appropriate for illustration, fine art, graphic design, architecture, and comic design. Visit the DIVA Workshop and Class web site for up-coming offerings.

Another South Eugene team took third with “The Sudden Adventure,” a live action film from Asa Clifford, Camille Westerberg.
Fourth place went to Marshall Rutter from Churchill High for "Lost."Festival entries will be screened later at Maude Kerns, the Eugene International Film Festival, The Best of the Best Independent Film Festival and as shorts package at the Bijou Art Cinemas. Shannon Hardin February Volunteer of the Month. Shannon does a little bit of everything for us at DIVA, notes Volunteer Coordinator Becky Guy. Since last spring, she has helped out with gallery hosting, special events like our gARTen Party and exhibit receptions, and she is always willing to help us with special projects. Shannon has the confidence to just jump right in with little direction, and she helps us keep track of all the details during events. We are so grateful for her time and energy - volunteers like Shannon are imperative to DIVA's success.
Shannon says that,"Volunteering at DIVA has been a rewarding experience for me. I believe that art is a fundamental part of the human condition and should be supported in every community. DIVA fills an important role in the Lane County arts community and I am honored to be a part of that support system.
I love volunteering at DIVA! It doesn't matter if I am gallery hosting, pouring wine at a reception, serving food at a fund raiser, painting a room, stuffing envelopes or running the vacuum after an event, I look forward to each and every volunteer opportunity at DIVA!"
DIVA Is Looking For A Few Good Media Arts Volunteers. DIVA's Media Arts Committee is looking for individuals interested in helping to develop the film, video, multimedia, and performance program at the Center. In particular we are looking for candidates who work in the technology end of time based art (creation, production or display of) or who have experience and/or credentials as grant writers. If interested and want more information about options contact Kristi Koons at <divamac.chair@gmail.com>.
DIVA's Social Networks. Did you know that not only does DIVA have a web site and this online newsletter, but the Center is also connected to numerous social networks. The DIVA Center and the Media Arts Program have sites on MySpace and enjoy a combined total of over 300 "friends". These are individuals who can be reached with news of events by online bulletin boards or e-mail. The Media Art Program also has a YouTube site where video clips by DIVA guest speakers and the work of visiting artists is made available. If you have a MySpace or YouTube account of your own please consider becoming networked with DIVA.
DIVA Monthly Newsletter Change. If this newsletter looks different - it is. We have changed the header and background as well as some basic layout features as well. People often confused the previous publication with that of the DIVA web site. Now there is no mistaking the difference between the two. Let us know what you think. Write us: diva.newsletter@gmail.com
DIVA Has Some Basic Simple Needs. When it comes to DIVA's tool box it seems as though it is lacking many of the resources needed for hanging gallery shows, doing minor repairs, and just completing everyday tasks. If you'd like to make a contribution, please do so. The Center is in need of a laser level, stud finder, tape measurers - long ones, quality saw, hammer, wrenches, needle nosed pliers, wire cutters, heavy duty staplers, paper cutters that work, sharp scissors, and paint brushes. We also need a NEW DVD player for window and exhibit use and additional gallery benches.
DIVA OpenLens Festival Recognizes Artists . DIVA's Fourth Annual OpenLens Festival concluded on Sunday, January 13th with an awards ceremony recognizing the growing independent film movement in SW Oregon.
The Jury selected Best of Show Award went to Lance Troxel's "The Golden Pose". His film tells a humorous story about a living-statue performer seeking out the perfect pose only to be harassed by his competitors.
Both the Jury's Honorable Mention and the Audience Choice awards went to Rebecca Purice's "Vanport: Oregon's Lost City". This historical documentary explores the racial integration that occurred in Portland after Oregon's second largest city during World War II, Vanport, was destroyed within hours by the 1948 Columbia River flood.
A second Jury selected Honorable Mention went to Terry Holloway's "The Kitchen Staff". Holloway's short film explores the social limitations of being part of a restaurant's kitchen staff on break in the dinning room.
The festival drew over 270 patrons to the Center during the two days of workshops and screenings

Portland Producer Teaches At DIVA. Film director and producer Aaron Douglas was the filmmaker-in-residence at this year's OpenLens Festival. Douglas, who co-produce the documentary Monster Camp taught two half-day workshops on documentary film production and distribution.
Douglas also screened the award winning documentary Monster Camp (2007) by Cullen Hoback. The film presented a rare and fascinating glimpse into the world of live-action role playing gamers at NERO International in Seattle. For 48 consecutive hours, participants immerse themselves in a world completely unlike our own becoming warriors, sorcerers, dwarves, and lizard people. It is a world of fantasy, chivalry, and imagination if only for one weekend a month. (Photo: Gary Ferrington)
Angry Filmmaker Offers DIVA Workshop.
DIVA offered a workshop on self-marketing for independent filmmakers taught by Portland filmmaker Kelley Baker (aka Angry Filmmaker) on Saturday, January 19th.
Baker addresses the primary question indie filmmakers have - how do they get their films seen? From wooden nickels to websites, to press kits and reviews Kelley Baker walked participants though different ways to get an audience to turn out for indie screenings.
Kelley Baker challenged participants to assess the real market for their film and provided examples of other filmmakers getting their work out, after their films were turned down by traditional distributors.
Baker screened his feature "Birddog" on Friday, January 18th.

DIVA Member's Feature Film Released. Neal Miller's feature film 'Raising Flagg" has been released on DVD. The film stars Oscar® winner, Alan Arkin, as Flagg Purdy, a lovable, but stubborn father of six who is easily overwhelmed by life’s little annoyances. When a silly argument with his neighbor sends Flagg into believing he is dying, his devoted wife and his estranged children are brought together where sibling conflicts and long-simmering resentments ultimately bring this dysfunctional family closer together.

EXHIBITS: FEBRUARY - MARCH |
Join us for First Friday on February 1st, 2008 from 5:30-8:30pm to celebrate the opening for a new Members' Gallery exhibit, The Great House, by Deborah Heal. Architects as Artists continues in our other five galleries. It features the work of internationally renowned architect, Robert Harvey Oshatz, alongside historical and recent images of downtown architecture from the city of Eugene, selected work of downtown proposals from UO architecture students, and artwork by local, working architects. The exhibit is sponsored by Wiswall & Walsh and runs through March 1st, 2008.
We are continuing to feature Robert Harvey Oshatz, from Portland, who presents models, photographs, floor plans, drawings, and video of his work in three of DIVA's galleries. Mr. Oshatz began working in the architectural field in high school, and studied under Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr. while receiving a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Arizona State University. In 1971, Mr. Oshatz established the firm of Robert Harvey Oshatz, Architect, which has designed and built numerous commercial and residential projects over the past twenty plus years.
Our Main Room focuses on downtown redevelopment, an issue that remains at the forefront of discussion in our community and at DIVA. This exhibit frames the discussion with an architectural lens. Photographs of architecture from the 1960's and current images of our sparse downtown from the City of Eugene, along with four proposals for redeveloping Broadway to 10th and Charnelton St. to Olive St. provide context for the panel discussion at the opening reception.
Our smallest gallery features an exhibit of non-architectural artwork by 13 local architects. Pieces range from paintings and drawings to sculptures and furniture. All of the artists work at local architecture firms, teach architecture at the University of Oregon, or are retired architects; one is deceased.
MEMBER'S GALLERY
DIVA's Members's Gallery is all new with an exhibit by Deborah Heal, The Great House. She says, "As I paint, the sense of time and place diminishes as I peer into a large luminous moment where design is creating itself. Deep knowing emerges of where and when to place the brush and how to move the smooth colors over the surface. It is not my thinking mind that calculates this act but a rapt observance of the impulse to create. I believe we all carry this impulse. As in a great house, there are many rooms of diverse style and function.
This exhibit captures several of my inner rooms. Being from Santa Fe, the vistas, colors, and shapes of the breathtaking northern New Mexico landscape color many of these paintings. I will continue to explore this great house and travel a painting pathway to the innermost room. My footsteps will be heard." This exhibit runs through March 1st, 2008. Casselman Archive of Islamic and Mudejar Architecture in Spain. The late Eugene Casselman was quite an Iberian enthusiast, and during his thirty years of travel in the region, he created over four thousands color slides and black and white photographs documenting the architecture of Spain. Most of these items focus on the Mudejar style, which was an ornate court style largely inspired by Spanish Islamic architecture. Recently, the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections project took on the task of organizing, describing, and scanning this collection in order to place it online. Visitors can now take in this marvelous collection, and they can search these materials by place, date, subject, or title. Looking around via the subject groupings isn't a bad way to start, and they include "Visigothic", "Asturian", and "Romanesque". Visit Web Site.
