Art Pour Favor bottling slide showArt Pour Favor A Success. The weather on February 14th was accomodating as the DIVA Board, staff, and friends succeeded in the first Art Pour Favor wine bottling and fund raising event. Almost all the Pinot Gris that was available for the event was sold and the Center has some DIVA labeled Cabernet to sell or use at various functions.

DIVA Art Pour Favor Wine Label Competition Winners. DIVA announced that the winners of its first juried Art Pour Favor wine label competition were Sandi Whetzel of Days Creek and Tenold Peterson of Junction City. The two winning labels appear on a special bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Gris wines to be featured at the Center's receptions and fund raising events in 2009. Whetzel and Peterson were honored at the Rainsong Winery bottling party in Cheshire on February 14th where they hand signed labels.
Sandi Whetzel is an acrylic artist whose work embraces the nuances of shapes, patterns and colors drawn from the plant world. Her entry captures the essence of a sun-drenched vineyard with engaging shapes of vines and bottled grapes.
Tenold Peterson is an artist known for his stained glass window designs such as those for Eugene's Noah Bethesda Lutheran Church and the Junction City United Methodist Church. His label is a colorful abstract capturing the spirit of the vineyard and muse of good wines.
The Art Pour Favor label competition was organized by the DIVA Board and staff in conjunction with what is hoped to be an annual wine bottling fund raising event. This year participants bottled and labeled a 2006 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon from the Desert Wind Winery in Washington's Yakima Valley. The bottling party took place at the RainSong Vineyard in Cheshire.

Kudos To DIVA Board President. Randall Stender, FVP with Merrill Lynch in Eugene, was named one of the top 1,000 financial advisors in the country by Barron’s Magazine. Stender was one of 10 advisors chosen in Oregon. Stender is President of the DIVA Board.

Art Talk By Installation artist Rebecca Lubas. Rebecca Lubas shared notes about her installation work on exhibit in DIVA's Gallery 5 during February. Lubas' exhibit consisted of two large installation pieces. The first was a construction of many pages of oil-painted vellum paper into a wing-like structure that extends from a corner to fan out into the room. The second is a large multi-panel ink on paper drawing than spans two walls crawling over the doorway and onto the floor and ceiling.
Lubas says of her work, "I enjoy working with paper because of the simplicity and flexibility of the material. It requires very little preparation and has an inspiring immediacy. It is two dimensional yet it can become so much more. My current work reflects my desire to pull drawings into a three dimensional space."
"I think of art-making as an exciting journey through critical thinking, problem solving, and intuition. I am also curious about the tension between image and object. At what point does a drawing or painting become a sculpture?" A slide show of Rebecca's installation in process of being set-up at DIVA is available on her Blog site.

Leah Wilson Recognized As Volunteer Of The Month. Leah Wilson has been volunteering at DIVA since October of '08. Since her arrival to the Arts community at DIVA, she has become an active member of the Exhibits and Education Committees. She also works the First Friday events and gallery hosts. Leah also is intending to become a workshop Instructor at DIVA for teaching CaFE and Color Theory.
Leah says of her experiences at the Center, "DIVA has provided the opportunity for me to develop a sense of place in my new home here in Eugene. Sara and Nick provided a warm and welcome invitation to delve into DIVA’s community as soon as I walked through the doors for the first time. Within a very short time I found myself participating in some of the inner workings of DIVA. I have never experienced an organization that is as supportive as DIVA in creating a non-intimidating atmosphere to step into areas that are new to me. I feel that DIVA will gladly allow me to explore any interest I have which only helps my own career as an artist to grow and flourish. The wonderful staff at DIVA have encouraged me to bring my skills and experiences into the greater community of Eugene. For this opportunity, I am greatly appreciative."

Join DIVA's Volunteer Cadre. DIVA's cadre of volunteer assistants has made it an outstanding downtown center for the visual arts. If you have only a few hours a week, or many, to offer as a volunteer, DIVA would like to hear from you. The Center is looking for individuals interested in serving as Gallery Hosts to greet patrons during the Center's open hours and provide information about DIVA's many programs and opportunities. Volunteers to assist with events, receptions, and other activities are also needed. If you have an interest in film and performances there are needs for individuals to help manage events. There are also special receptions and programs at which food and beverage servers are needed. The Center is also in need of specialized services including administrative assistance and graphic design. We can also use carpenters, painters, and others to help maintain the building. Interested? Contact the Center's Exhibit Director for more information. Or, visit the Volunteer page on DIVA's web site.

Donated Art Work to Benefit DIVA. The Blue Heron, by Rogena Degge, has been donated by the artist to DIVA to sell with proceeds going to the support of on-going expenses of the Center. It is the hope of the artist that other artists will consider doing this, as well.
The Monotype, valued at $1,500, is on display for sale in DIVA's main lobby and will also be presented at fund raisers and VIP evenings throughout March.
Monotype, a printmaking process whereby colored inks are applied, in this piece, to plexiglas. Inks are rolled on or applied with tools or brushes. Colors may be overlapped, wiped away, marked into, brushed on. The image is then printed onto a dampened piece of paper. Often a 2nd printing can be obtained if enough ink is left on the plexiglas. That print is called a ghost.
The Blue Heron is in part a ghost. However, the artist returned to the inked plate and added and subtracted color from it and then printed on the dried ghost image. The result is an original monotype.
One may wonder, what about the first print? It is more intense in color and awaits possible future attention. Rogena is on the DIVA Board and is a part owner of the Tre Amiche studio and gallery in the historic Quackenbush building on East Broadway (see top of page).

Lap Top Computer Given DIVA. Any one who has worked the Center's front desk knows how archaic DIVA's computers can be. So, staff and volunteers are excited about a new Dell lap top computer that has been donated by volunteer Sheila Roth. Many thanks to Sheila for her generous gift.

OpenLens 2009OpenLens Festival Photo Album. The DIVA 2009 OpenLens Festival held January 9th, 10th, and 11th featured film screenings, seminars, and a festival filmmaker-in-residence and host.
Joanna Priestley, a Portland animator, was the festival's filmmaker-in-residence and host. She gave a public screening of her animated work on Friday, and the next day gave a three hour seminar on creating effective animation.
The Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge, now a part of the OpenLens Festival, featured the work of local young filmmakers and brought a full house to DIVA for a screening of their work and an awards ceremony.
The South West Oregon Short Film Competition, the highlight of the weekend, included work by filmmakers from as far away as Klamath Falls. The festival ended with a wrap party and awards ceremony. The slide show at left is a selection of images from this year's festival events.

EXHIBITS: MARCH
Main Gallery: Portland Chapter, Colored Pencil Society of America, 18th Annual Colored Pencil Show.

The Portland Chapter (DC201) of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) exhibits colored pencil artwork in a variety of styles and subjects by over 25 Oregon and Southwest Washington artists.

The chapter will present demonstrations and host a "try me" table (dates TBA). An awards ceremony will be held to present awards for the show's winning entries.

The juror for the show is Edith Harrison a retired art teacher and currently teaching at Linn Benton Community College.

Gallery 1: James Okeefe - "Jobs"

The thought provoking large-scale multi-media "business" sculptures of James O'Keefe offer insights into the path of consumerism and the survival of the artistic spirit in these times of economic uncertainty.

O'Keefe notes, "One experience we all share is the work we do to support ourselves so that we may be free to do what we really want to do. I realized I might look at "the Job" or "Work", as an art form and since that realization, have been building little portable "businesses sculptures," some of which are included in this show.  My vision in these pieces has been to give expression to the emotions we carry around about our jobs. Their almost Third World appearance and implied poverty makes a statement on the economic disenfranchisement that is taking place in America."

With a degree in Fine Art from Otis Institute in Los Angeles, James O’Keefe lives on the Oregon coast and supports his family as a nurse.

Gallery 2: Brian Knowles - "pinkontinuum"

Brian Knowles’ installation pinkontinuum includes a motion animation element and explores a pink, paranoid world.

Knowles says of his work, "I make art at an intersection of animation, printmaking, drawing, and installation. I recycle and reuse my installations, informing new work with elements from past ones. The pink foam-board structure on which my prints are pinned can conform to the architecture of a site or take on its own sculptural forms. When a space is covered in pink foam, it exists for me in a state of pure potential, and makes the place habitable for my work, giving it a substrate on which to survive and cling. Animation developed in my practice as a way to reveal the evolution of recombination and mutation in my process. I associate animation with the child-like and naive. I try to use this innocence as a foil against more cynical content. I’m experimenting with using bright, iconic, graphic imagery to obscure gloomier, more paranoid content."

Although born in Orange, California, Brian was raised in Oklahoma.  He has degrees in painting and biochemistry from Rice University. He has lived in Oregon for 8 years and received his MFA in printmaking from the University of Oregon in 2008. In addition to his art practice, Brian enjoys DJ-ing, bird watching, and petting cats.

Gallery 3: University of Oregon Video Art 2009 "Hand Painted Films"

This is a representation of hand painted films made from found footage, clear, black and/or white leader 16mm film by University of Oregon students enrolled in the upper division Video Art class. Transferred to video, the films are shown as a continuous projection.

This is the second exhibition at the DIVA of hand painted films produced by students in Kartz Ucci’s upper division Video Art class.
Gallery 5: Ankush Vimawala - "Journeys – Illustrations of; within and without"

Ankush Vimawala takes us through a photographic journey, witnessing his travels through the world of form as well the formless. This exhibit includes photographic images from places such as Thailand, India, France, Turkey, Malaysia and the USA.

Ankush Vimawala began to take a serious interest in photography when he bought himself a Nikon DSLR camera. He then took a nature photography class at LCC under instructor David Stone. Since then he has continued learning through the internet, books, peer-critiques etc. He maintains an online photoblog (ankush.vimawala.com) and his work was recently showcased at the Eugene Mayor's Art Show at the Jacobs Gallery. Software engineer by day, he also also holds a degree in the indian classical drumming, and appears with various bands in and around Eugene.

Vimawala notes about his work, "There was a calling in photography for me, I felt it, I pursued it - without knowing what was in store. Combined with my interest in travel, love of nature, architecture, diverse cultures, and spirituality a collection of images with an underlying theme began to emerge."

Members Gallery: March 1 Karen Sosa - "Nature"

Painter Karen Sosa brings a vibrant exploration of nature through paint to the Members’ Gallery at DIVA.

Sosa says of her work, "My art has always been significantly influenced by nature. I grew up on Martha’s Vineyard, an island off of Cape Cod on the Massachusetts coast.  At a young age I developed a great appreciation for our natural world and particularly a love of the ocean.  My art is inspired by organic forms, nature and people.  I aim to make my art concise, but with depth of form, color, and subject matter.  In my current work, I try to use color in combination with strong forms and structure to create powerful images. I hope that my art will communicate with and be absorbed by the viewer.

WEB: EXPLORATIONS
Los Angeles County Museum of Art: Videos and Podcasts. Art lovers who can't make it to 5905 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles will enjoy mulling over some of the videos and podcasts presented on this site. Currently, the site has over fifty different programs, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will continue to add new programs over the coming months. In the "Current Features" area, visitors can take a walk through the new museum campus and also learn a bit about an exhibition that highlights the work of Salvador Dali. Other visitors may be more interested in the "Public Programs" area. Here they can listen to conversations and dialogues with the likes of Anthony Hernandez, Ken Gonzales-Day, Jeff Koons, and John Baldessari. Finally, the "Documentaries" area offers up profiles of Jacob Lawrence, a group of contemporary potters, and noted fluorescent light artist Dan Flavin. The Screening Room is your source for video and audio from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Visit LACMA Screening Room Web Site.
