July gARTen Party Announced.
     "Under the Crescent Moon" is the theme for DIVA's third annual fundraising gARTen Party scheduled for the evening of July 18th at the gardens of Spud and Paula Freeman in Junction City.
     The two acres of spacious gardens, connected by walkways from one to another, include a rose garden, parterre (ornamental flower beds), cut flower garden, vegetable garden, orchard, Japanese style garden and the "west lawn". Lovely water features and sculptures complement these unique spaces.
     The Mediterranean themed evening has an Oregon flair that features produce from the Freeman's vegetable gardens, Oregon wines and cheeses, and a fabulous feast that includes Oregon lamb, salmon, shrimp and Greek moussaka. Music provided by Mood Area 52.
     A silent auction of juried garden art creates an opportunity for garden enthusiasts to secure acquisition of outstanding original pieces.
     This beautiful summer evening event supports DIVA's efforts to provide the community with juried exhibits by regional visual artists, media arts programming, educational workshops and seminars, art talks, and artist related services.
     Mark your calendar now for an evening to remember. Participation in the gARTen party is $105 per person, which includes dinner, motor coach transportation, and musical entertainment. Reservations can be made starting June 5th at DIVA 110 W. Broadway. Payment is required to hold reservations.
     For more information call Mary Unruh at 344-3482 or contact her by email at mary@divacenter.org.
    DIVA thanks the Paula and Spud Freeman for their support of this fundraising event. Freeman's son Chauncey, a University of Oregon student who is graduating this spring with a double major in landscape architecture and business administration, has been designing and landscaping the beautiful gardens since he was a middle school student.
     DIVA also thanks Newman's Fish Market, Café Yumm, Café Soriah, Anatolia’s, Metropol Bakery and Davis' Restaurant and Bar for helping put together an outstanding repast!

Calling all artists! DIVA announces an art contest that showcases the work of regional artists while also supporting the fundraising efforts of the Center.
     Artists are invited to submit entries in any media, based on the garden theme "Eastern Visions". The submitted work is to reflect a garden aesthetic.
     A committee of community artists will jury entries. Winning artwork will be auctioned as a highlight of DIVA's third annual gARTen Party fundraising event on July 18th at the beautiful two-acre Junction City garden site of Paula and Spud Freeman.
     Work not selected for the auction will be later displayed and sold with proceeds going to DIVA's fundraising efforts.
    Winning artists will receive a ticket to the DIVA gARTen Party event (a $105 value that includes transportation, dinner and entertainment), plus regional press coverage, acknowledgement in DIVA's Newsletter, and winners will be featured on the Center's web site during July.
     Submitted artwork is to measure no more than 60 inches on any side, weigh less than 40 lbs, and be preassembled if applicable.
    All artwork must be accompanied by a completed application form and be submitted by June 26, 2009. There is no entry fee. All submitted artwork becomes the property of DIVA.

Did You Miss This Art Beat Segment? Oregon Public Broadcasting recently presented "The Art of Collecting Art" a half hour special in which Producer KC Cowan explored why Portland (and Oregon) is such a great market for original art….why people collect…and how to get started yourself! The program is available online at Oregon Public Broadcasting and can be viewed at anytime: The Art of Collecting Art.

Aldrich June Volunteer of the Month. Jeffrey Aldrich began volunteering at DIVA in March of 2009.
   In the short time he has been volunteering, Jeffery has shared his illustration skills with the production of a new DIVA Center trifold which will be used in DIVA's current fundraising initiative: the 50 for $1,000 campaign. He has also designed various posters and fliers for DIVA's media arts program.
     Jeffrey says of his experience, "So far volunteering at DIVA has been more than I thought it would have been. I've been given an opportunity to really challenge myself with the projects that have been requested of me.
     I chose DIVA because I felt of all the places in Eugene, it would be the best place to start to give back to the Eugene Art Community, and to position myself within an organization which would help me to become more of an emerging artist.
    DIVA has been a nice place to begin to reestablish myself as a designer, and to work on small projects that builds upon my own interests in pursuing design."

DIVA Art Talks Attract Noon Time Audiences. Eric Ostlind, DIVA's Program Director, has scheduled a number of art talks this spring featuring artists currently exhibiting at the Center.
   These noon-time free presentations are being discovered by many as a great way to learn more about the work on exhibit at DIVA directly from the artists who create it. The May Art Talks included:

May 15th: Installation artists John Paul Gardner and Sam Jeibmann discussed their sculptural installation "Maybe there will be Sound" on view in Gallery 3. The installation incorporates existing architectural elements within the gallery space and encourages viewers to become active participants within the immersive environment.
     John Paul Gardner is currently an MFA candidate in sculpture at the University of Oregon. John graduated in 2007 with a BFA in Sculpture from the State University of New York College at Potsdam.
    Sam Jeibmann will receive his BFA in sculpture from the University of Oregon in 2009.  "I am fascinated with the use of light in sculpture as a medium. The power of light within a space can dictate ones perception of their environment and with sculpture that is a key factor."

May 22nd: Ceramic artist Judy Alison discussed her exhibit in the Member's Gallery. Judy is best known for her meditative clay pinch pots but her May exhibit explored new directions that included hangings and 3D work.
    Alison is a Eugene artist who hastaught children and adults, in schools and in her home studio. She has been an active member of DIVA for nearly 4 years, and an occasional leader of First Friday Art Walks.

May 29th: Abstract painter Jacqueline Lukowski spoke about how a year and a half ago she discovered her interest in abstract painting almost by serendipity.
     It was while reworking the surface of a particularly unsuccessful plein air painting that the emerging fragments of color intrigued her.
   This discovery lead her to begin each of her paintings with a concept that grows from a series of lines and blocks of color on the canvas.
     Her objective is to allow the painting to speak to each individual. Are they fun? Dark? Confusing? Ethereal?  Although she, as the artist may know what each painting says to her, Lukowski notes, it doesn't say the same thing to everyone else. The viewer is the judge.

Sunday, June 14 and 28 - The Films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Time: 1:00 PM - 6:30 PM Includes two films and discussion
Instructor: Tom Blank
Day Pass For Both Films: $7.00
~~~ Fassbinder was one of Germany's most prolific and controversial filmmakers. His stories give us a vital, upsetting picture of German postwar social unrest. Always interested in those on the fringes of society, his work was greatly influenced by the glossy American soap operas of Douglas Sirk.
June 14th
1:00 PM "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul" (1973 - 92 min.) In a stunning homage to Sirk's "All That Heaven Allows", an elderly cleaning woman finds love with a Morrocan mechanic half her age. For this work, film critic Vincent Canby called Fassbinder "the most original talent since Godard."
4:00 PM "The Marriage of Maria Braun" (1978 -120 min.) Fassbinder's biggest international hit. The story of a woman's life from WWII through the repressive 1950s. This is the first part of the BRD trilogy (BDR stands for Bundesrepublik Deutschland - the Federal Republic of Germany).
June 28th
1:00 PM "Lola" (1981 - 113 min.) The BDR trilogy continues with a satiric homage to von Sternberg's "The Blue Angel."
4:00 PM "Veronika Voss" (1982 - 104 min.) The conclusion of the trilogy is a stylized black-and-white film based on the life of an actress now forgotten after being a starlet for the Nazis.
Friday, June 19 - Art Talk: Gwen Seemel, painter
Time: Noon
Cost: Free
~~~ Gwenn Seemel is a Portland painter whose multi-ethnic portraits mix more than color. Seemel has gathered subjects that don’t always come to mind when one thinks of a U.S. citizen: first and second generation Americans. And, instead of simply painting the participants as they are, Seemel has blended their likenesses with American icons. These combinations are a kind of allegorical portraiture cum political cartoon that leave those leaning both left and right questioning their understanding of the United States.

Sunday, June 21- Artist Salon:  Art Critique with Terry Way
Time: 4:00 PM
Admission: $5.00, Member's Free
~~~ Do you remember the art critiques that you had in college.  The ones that went on and on and the biggest challenge was to stay awake?  This review style is nothing like that.  Each artist should bring one or two pieces that the entire group will respond to.  No technical advice or design critique.  A low key, non-threatening opportunity to find out how your fellow artists see your work.  Terry Way moderates.
Sunday, June 21- Video Slam!
Time: 7:00 PM
Admission: Free
~~~ Have you seen the latest work by emerging regional artists? DIVA's Video Slam, now meeting every third Sunday of the month provides that opportunity. The slam welcomes students, amateurs, and professionals. Everyone is encouraged to bring completed videos, or work in-progress, for screening. We will watch, discuss and choose the best of the slam!
The DIVA Video Slam has become a venue for new and seasoned independent filmmakers to share their work with audiences, most for the first time. Feeback from audiences helps artists hone their work resulting in many of the slam films having gone on to competitive events. Examples at left are from recent screenings

EXHIBITS: JUNE
Main Gallery: "Apple Pie", acrylic paintings by Gwenn Seemel

Gwenn Seemel's Apple Pie exhibit challenges its viewers on many levels. It's the contemporary manifestation of an old-school genre as well as an activist inquiry that leaves those leaning both left and right discussing their understanding of the United States. It's a series of images that starts a conversation about what it means to be American Apple Pie: a scrumptious dessert; the descriptor of all things American; and a series of provocative paintings.
     Apple Pie challenges its viewers on many levels. It's the contemporary manifestation of an old-school genre as well as an activist inquiry that leaves those leaning both left and right discussing their understanding of the United States. It's a series of images that starts a conversation about what it means to be American.
     Gwenn Seemel's exhibit "Apple Pie" will be featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting's ArtBeat in the fall.

Gallery 1: "*Eyes, Hands, Hair, Bones, and Meat", mixed media by Micah Weber

Essentially Micah Weber would like the viewer to see this series in its totality as a singular work that reflects patterns and elements that are evident in the individual pieces.   Rather than moving towards a direct straightforward conclusion, each piece is to be seen as a lateral shift; a continuation of the same thought from different vantage points.  The idea being that each drawing/painting/book is a part of a larger concept (a concept that is only realized by its absence.)

Gallery 2: "Altered Landscapes" abstract paintings by Jacqueline Lukowski

This is the first showing of Jacqueline Lukowski's abstract paintings.  She notes that she found that she could "really escape" into the painting process while creating these images.  Are they fun? Dark? Confusing? Ethereal? Maybe.  The viewer will be the judge.
    The concept for these paintings originated about a year and a half ago.  Lukowski have been primarily a landscape painter, however after a particularly unsuccessful afternoon of plein air painting, she carted the painting back to her studio and started covering the surface with black.
    As she was slashing on the black paint her eye was caught by the wonderful pieces of color that still remained.  She began playing with those colors and shapes and what emerged was no longer a landscape.  She continued this process with other failed landscapes, but as her plein air paintings improved she ran out of failures to transform.
    Lukowski now begins each of her abstract paintings with a concept that grows from a series of lines and blocks of color on the canvas.  Her objective is to allow the painting to speak to each individual.  She notes that she knows what each painting says to her, but she knows it doesn't say the same thing to everyone.

Gallery 3: "Maybe there will be Sound" sculptural installation by John Paul Gardner and Sam Jeibmann

This artist duo have created a sculptural installation that incorporates existing architectural elements within the gallery space.  Viewers will become active participants within the created immersive environment.
    John Paul Gardner & Sam Jeibmann began collaborating in 2007.  Utilizing elements ranging from living vegetation to lights, sound and a multitude of other materials they investigate sculptural installations through immersive environments. John Paul Gardner is currently an MFA candidate in sculpture at the University of Oregon. Sam Jeibmann will receive his BFA in sculpture from the University of Oregon in 2009.

Gallery 5: "Everyday Travels" Woodblock landscapes by Charles Dougherty

The work of Charles Dougherty consists of woodblock landscapes printed in a gray scale.  The subject of his prints is his everyday surroundings in both Eugene and where he grew up on the southern coast.  The prints he makes are simply about appreciating where he live and his enjoyment of printmaking.  Dougherty's imagery is composed of scenes that he has become accustom to in his daily life.

Members’ Gallery - June: "Painted Bellies " Photographs by Phillip Lynch

What makes this different from most colored black and white photos is the selective use of the medium.   Where most hand colored photos are done in their entirety I have applied the color selectively.

WEB: EXPLORATIONS - South by Southwest Festival
The South by Southwest (SXSW) festival brings together distinguished speakers, musicians, social activists, and others every year. It seems they've also been dabbling in art, as this tremendous online art exhibition attests. Billed as the "world's first online HD art exhibition", the online collection contains over 280 paintings, including works from Gauguin, Cezanne, and Van Gogh. Using a visually unobtrusive icon, visitors can navigate the site through thematic subsections like "self portrait", "portrait", "landscape", and "inspiration". At the top of the page, users can take advantage of the all images button (set just between the arrow buttons and the "Menu" button), which allows a broader view of all the images on the site. The left and right arrows to the left of the menu buttons allow visitors to scroll through each artist's section and the aforementioned thematic areas. As one might imagine, the level of detail that can be obtained from each painting is exquisite, and artists in particular will appreciate this flexibility. Clicking on the "Menu" button will allow visitors to email a selection to a friend, embed a link, and view copyright information. Source: Scout Report.
