Unlike other Electronic Art or New Media programs, it's not rooted only in the visual, but is more actively about performance and musical possibilities. It's a really good match for me and of course, it's a full-ride plus stipend position, guaranteed for the duration of my tenure there - who can pass that up?"

Now that the Lord Leebrick Theater is moving in next door, it seems there is a new beginning towards the revitalizing of Broadway as a destination for Eugene residents. What better step than for me to be a part of making that happen?"

Main Gallery: "Tropes," paintings by Leah Wilson Leah Wilson’s paintings are the result of the progression of her relationship with the places in which she has lived. They are slow explorations charting the creation of personal sense of place, developing an intimate acquaintance with the natural and human-induced patterns in the landscapes and their subtle features, changes and cycles.
The Ophelia series, consisting of four separate groupings of 3-4 paintings within each group, is derived from direct relationships with the rivers. Each grouping focuses on a specific ‘incident’ or place and object event. In this way I can incorporate the concept of time with the medium of painting instead of using a more common time-based medium such as film or video to refer to change. Each individual painting within a grouping represents a distinctive point in time, but grouped with its counterparts, the paintings begin to tell the story not only of the river, but also the shifting nature of light and water on a particular object in the river, but also the shifting nature of the focus of our own attention as we observe that object throughout a length of time.
Leah Wilson received her M.F.A. in 2003 from the San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, California and received her B.F.A. in painting and drawing from the Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna Beach, California in 1995 where she was the recipient of the institute’s merit scholarship. She was born in Newport Beach, California in 1973 and currently resides in Eugene, Oregon.
Wilson’s work is in the Collections of eBay, Inc., Adobe Systems, Inc., Namco Inc., as well as other corporate and private collections, and her photography has been featured in Common Ground Magazine.
Her paintings have been exhibited at Julie Baker Fine Art and featured at the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival in Nevada City, California, Los Medanos College Art Gallery in Pittsburgh, California and the Oakland Art Gallery in Oakland, California.

Gallery 1: "Places In Mind," photography by Lewis Forquer
Over the last four years he has captured these snapshots by constructing miniature stage settings and then photographing them with a 4x5 view camera. The miniature stage sets are hand constructed from materials such as matt board, wire, clay, etc., the props being no larger than a few inches in height.
Places of the Mind is comprised of snapshots from Lewis Forquer’s subconscious. They stem from feelings of not belonging, not fitting in, of being scared while growing up. The lonely hallways, dark rooms and outcroppings are reflections of these thoughts and feelings.
Lewis Forquer currently lives in Lebanon. He first became interested in photography during his senior year in high school. He received his BFA in Photography at the University of Oregon in 2007. |
Gallery 2 and 5: "Labor of Love: Life at Alpha Farm," photography by Kate Harnedy
In today’s consumer driven society, there are a growing number of people choosing to live more closely together to fulfill a common purpose. They often share a common social, political, or spiritual vision, and present an alternative to mainstream society. “Labor of Love” is a photo documentary of Alpha Farm, a community in rural western Oregon, active since 1972 and one of the oldest communes in the state. Kate Harnedy received her BA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2005, where she also worked as a Teacher’s Assistant. After graduating, Harnedy worked freelance doing portrait, music and documentary photography. Her recent move to Oregon inspired her to focus her attention back onto documentary projects and becoming part of the fine art community. |
Members’ Gallery - August: "Greek Stones Speak: Travel Inspired Watercolors," Geoffrey McCormack, inspired by his travels on the Greek isle of Lesvos, re-contextualizes Greek mythology, archeology, and discovery in his work. The series features a visual investigation of ancient Greek figures alongside beach stones and modern debris.
Geoffrey McCormack, born in Berkeley, California, received his MA in sculpture from San Jose State University in 1972. He is a realist painter seeking a point of view of common objects to create a new context and meaning |

The content is based on roughly 30 hours of home movies. It was featured in DIVA's Openlens festival, The University of Oregon School of Art's student film festival, and the Freewaves Festival online and on the UCLA campus. It was also hosted on a continuous video loop at the University of Oregon School of Art for six months as an example of student work.

November 6-7, 2009 What is Film? Change & Continuity in the 21st Century
Turnbull Center, Portland, Oregon
What is film? What is the future of film? How are digital technologies changing the nature and production of film? What is the future of Hollywood? How is the Internet changing the film industry’s models of production, distribution and consumption?
Films are now produced using a wide range of digital technologies, distributed via the Internet, mobile devices, and miscellaneous videodisc formats, and are viewed at the convenience of consumers. Change is everywhere.
Even with these alterations to the nature of cinema, we still refer to “film.” Hollywood still distributes its products to motion picture theaters and television outlets, and is still motivated primarily by profit. Some things haven’t changed. Yet.
This conference will feature a unique coalescing of film professionals, film and media scholars and students, government and community officials, as well as film fans. The event will feature keynote speakers, roundtables, paper presentations, screenings, receptions and workshops, in an attempt to answer questions about the changing nature of cinema.
Oregon and the city of Portland are no strangers to cinema with several recent Hollywood productions being filmed in and around the city. Likewise, burgeoning independent film and art scene sets it apart from its other U.S. cities. The release of the 3-D stop-motion animation sensation Coraline (produced by Laika Studios) has further bolstered Portland’s place in contemporary cinema.
The event will be linked to the proposed Cinema Studies major at the University of Oregon, plus offer possibilities of links to other universities and film programs in the Portland area. The conference will offer course credit for Portland and Eugene students

SFMOMA: Kerry James Marshall
~~~~ ( Scout Report) Released in February of this year, SFMOMA presents this interactive feature on the work of Kerry James Marshall, an African-American artist born in 1955, known for his large-scale paintings and installations. Marshall's work uses imagery drawn from the urban experience, African-American popular culture, the civil rights movement, and his own personal geography. He says, 'You can’t be born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955 and grow up in South Central [Los Angeles] near the Black Panthers headquarters, and not feel like you’ve got some kind of social responsibility. You can’t move to Watts in 1963 and not speak about it."
The interactive feature provides in-depth analysis of several of Marshall's works. For example, visitors can use the hot spot function to hear Marshall explain the iconography of Souvenirs III, 1998, as well as watching a video explaining why he chose to use black & white for the "Souvenirs" series of paintings.
There are additional videos in which Marshall explains the background of his "Mementos" series of paintings, created between 1997 and 2003; how he was inspired by the work of old masters such as Rembrandt; and also discusses depicting the Founding Fathers, Washington and Jefferson, in his work.
