Welcome DIVA's New Exhibit Director. Bernie Brooks is an artist, curator, and educator from Detroit, Michigan. He grew up a short bike ride from Lake St. Clair, and has since lived near a number of fairly substantial bodies of water, including (but not limited to) the Detroit, Themes, Tiber, Potomac and Charles Rivers, the Mediterranean and North Seas, and the Atlantic Ocean.
As an undergraduate, Bernie studied Fine Art, History and Art History at Alma College in Michigan and Regent’s College in the UK. He eventually relocated to Detroit where he spent the better part of his professional career, settling in the “Midtown” neighborhood of Woodbridge.
Bernie completed his MFA coursework in Printmaking at Wayne State University in 2008, has been teaching design and printmaking at the university level since 2006, and independently curating art exhibits since 2002—most recently, It’s Not Perfect…But We Try (July-August 2009), a traveling exhibition presented in cooperation with the University of Michigan’s satellite gallery space, WORK: Detroit.
Currently, he lives with his wife and some pets in an old house close to a small river in Cottage Grove, Oregon. He is extremely excited to be channeling all of his curatorial efforts into DIVA, and can’t wait to get to work.
Micah Weber Named October volunteer of the month. Micah has been a volunteer at DIVA since the Fall of 2008. He has served on the Exhibits Committee and most recently provided office support and oversight of the current exhibit installation. He also assisted with the installation of the west hallway mural designed by Portland artist, Arcy Douglass. Micah worked closely with former Exhibits Director Nick Chase who notes: "I had the pleasure of meeting Micah during my first First Friday event at DIVA when he introduced himself as an upcoming, exhibiting artist and I wasted no time in recruiting him as a volunteer at DIVA.
Micah not only typifies the kind of volunteerism that has kept DIVA operational, but also enables DIVA to excel at moments when we need it most. He brings skill, insight and energy to the building, and, like so many of DIVA's volunteers, has openly shown an investment and enthusiasm for the DIVA Community at large that has come to be a DIVA trademark, and has come to be why many of DIVA's Members and volunteers come to us."
Volunteer Event Assistants Needed. DIVA is in need of a cadre of volunteers who can be called upon for assistance with Center events ranging from gallery openings, receptions, ticket sales, to staffing snack bar concessions. Contact Sara Smith Saphn if you can join this special group of volunteers. Call 344-3482 or e-mail: diva.artservices@gmail.com
DIVA screens the Best of the 35th Northwest Film and Video Festival. The "Best Of..." tour presents a carefully selected cross-section of the state of filmmaking in the Northwest. These films, all chosen as official selections by Festival Judge Heike Kuhn, were screened at the 35th Fest this past year. They come to Eugene on October 3rd at 7:00 PM. Admission: $6.00. See DIVA Events Calendar for film titles and festival details.
Meet Board Member Becky Schwarzkopf. Becky Schwarzkopf joined the DIVA Board in May 2009. Becky is especially interested in growing DIVA’s unique downtown presence and in addressing facilities and space issues to maximize DIVA’s ability to pursue its mission. Downtown Eugene needs DIVA!
Becky and her husband Alex moved to Eugene from Boston in 2006 so Alex could pursue a DMA in Piano Performance at the University of Oregon. They were right in thinking Eugene would be a good fit for them, and Becky, Alex and their 10-month-old daughter Madelyn are enjoying and constantly exploring the arts community and natural wonders all around.
Becky grew up outside Asheville, North Carolina, and holds a BA in History and Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a JD, magna cum laude, from Boston University. Becky is a real estate and business attorney with Arnold Gallagher Percell Roberts & Potter, P.C. in Eugene. (Photo copyrighted by Becky Schwarzkopf).
New DIVA Position Announced. Sara Smith Saphn has assumed a new position at DIVA. Her title is Director of Art Services. She will continue work with volunteer recruitment and training. She will also process memberships and be working with the Executive Director on membership development and Intern projects. Additionally, she looks forward to working with the Artist Service Committee on professional development workshops as well as jurying for the Members Gallery.
Art Talk features the Eugene Grid Project. Photographers from the Eugene Grid Project, currently on exhibit at DIVA, gave an informative Art Talk about the project on September 18th.
The Eugene Grid Project (EGP) is a photographic study of Eugene based on a similar project in Portland. The nine project members took a standard map of the Eugene/Springfield metro area and divided it evenly into 58 squares. Each month a square is chosen at random and the group members spend that month photographing in the area bounded by the square.
There are no restrictions other than geographic area. At the end of each month the photographers meet to share work and choose a new square.
As a group, each month, 150-200 images are produced. The project will take just over five years to complete. EGP is slowly, comprehensively building the most complete photographic study ever conducted in Eugene/Springfield. Photo: Blake Andrews describes project map.
Roth Ends September Art Talk Series. Ceramist Sheila Roth, one of 31 artists on DIVA's annual Open Studios Art Tour in October, explored the concept, "From what sources are ideas for art generated? Where do you get your ideas to create art?" She screen a film on the creative process and work of Ruth Ellen Weisberg, dean of the USC Roski School of Fine Arts and then pursued with audience members their own sources for creative expression.
See Hear Now! A festival of sound art comes to DIVA October 25th through the 31st. Three juried sound installations will challenge the eye and ear as the Center's first exposition dedicated to sound provides a unique experience for patrons. See details in the Exhibits section below.
Fall Has Arrived. Regardless of the summer temperatures, fall has arrived. So with the sun beginning to move below the equator, we at DIVA have been preparing for a busy fall season that includes new exhibits, programs, and a building fund drive.
The monthly DIVA Newsletter will keep you informed about all activities at the Center. And remember, a weekly This Week At DIVA posting goes out to all on our mailing list. The DIVA Event Calendar, of course, is the place to find detailed descriptions about Center programming. Photo: Equinox on earth day/night map.

The Eugene Grid Project was born out of EGP spokesperson Blake Andrews’ involvement with the Portland Grid Project, now in the collection of Chris Rauchenberg’s Blue Sky Gallery in Portland. The Project is comprised of a group of emerging and mid-career photographers who have shown consistently across Oregon.

Members’ Gallery - October: "Drawings," By Crystal L. Scott
Crystal L. Scott will be exhibiting in the Members' Gallery beginning October 2 - When publicity goes out for Crystal, if you could mention something like 'Crystal L. Scott will introduce her work at 7pm, DIVA during First Friday' that will be great. A Meet-The-Artist introduction will be coordinated for her closer to time.
DIVA West Hallway: Site-Specific Work by Arcy Douglass
Portland architect Arcy Douglass has created a site-specific work at DIVA on exhibit through October. This work has been designed specifically for DIVA's West Hallway.
Douglass’ work relates directly to the space that it is, making, in his words, "the space more legible and inviting a deeper understanding of the physical space the viewer experiences." Arcy’s work is equally about the space it is designed for and the space of the gallery as it is articulated through the geometric drawings. Volunteer Aileen Tolentino, will be assisting with the project.
"See Hear Now!" DIVA celebrates the art of sound.
"See Hear Now!" is the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Art's inaugural festival of sound-related art that runs from October 25-31 at DIVA Center 110 W. Broadway.
"See Hear Now!" will heighten DIVA's continuing representation of local, cutting-edge arts. The Festival participants have been selected by a panel of guest artists who are specialists in the field of inter-media art, sound, and installation.
The three sound installations selected for the festival included:
"Remains." by Jessica Robinson. The installation explores the idea of removal: removal of the unnecessary, the unwanted, the old, and the used. In this work the artist uses this concept as the only means of audio manipulation. She record audio in her living space and then manipulated the audio files by removing that which she deem unnecessary.
"The Lonesome, Melancholy Reflections of the Hubble Space Telescope, Briefly Interrupted By a Chance Encounter with God," by Adam Alexander. This is a narrative sound piece that follows the uneventful, slightly depressing life and times of the Hubble Space Telescope, as it wanders alone and bored through space. As the title mentions, however, this mundane existence is momentarily awed by an encounter with a divine presence.
"Color Music" by Brian Walker. This project was
was composed using colors found on the keys of a toy piano. Color samples matching the keys were scanned into the computer and then the matching sound from each key was added to the video. The audio was only added after the color pattern was selected, so the audio is a direct product of the pattern.

MEDIA ARTS:
Chel White Brings Work to DIVA. Portland filmmaker Chel White will be a special visiting guest filmmaker as part of DIVA's Film Forum series on December 11th. From Sundance to Berlin to Hong Kong, Chel White's films have been exhibited in festivals all over the world, and recognized with numerous awards. His work has screened at the Smithsonian Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the High Museum in Atlanta. Two commissioned projects White directed are in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Here is an example of his work, The Wind, Set to a poem by Antonio Machado and narrated by Alec Baldwin. White uses time lapse photography to simultaneously display the majesty of nature and the destruction of humanity's footprint. This hauntingly beautiful film shows what we stand to lose if we continue to put the environment second to progress, but also shows that it is possible to put technological progress hand in hand with environmental preservation.

November 6-7, 2009 What is Film? Change & Continuity in the 21st Century
Turnbull Center, Portland, Oregon
What is film? What is the future of film? How are digital technologies changing the nature and production of film? What is the future of Hollywood? How is the Internet changing the film industry’s models of production, distribution and consumption?
Films are now produced using a wide range of digital technologies, distributed via the Internet, mobile devices, and miscellaneous videodisc formats, and are viewed at the convenience of consumers. Change is everywhere.
Even with these alterations to the nature of cinema, we still refer to “film.” Hollywood still distributes its products to motion picture theaters and television outlets, and is still motivated primarily by profit. Some things haven’t changed. Yet.
This conference will feature a unique coalescing of film professionals, film and media scholars and students, government and community officials, as well as film fans. The event will feature keynote speakers, roundtables, paper presentations, screenings, receptions and workshops, in an attempt to answer questions about the changing nature of cinema.
Oregon and the city of Portland are no strangers to cinema with several recent Hollywood productions being filmed in and around the city. Likewise, burgeoning independent film and art scene sets it apart from its other U.S. cities. The release of the 3-D stop-motion animation sensation Coraline (produced by Laika Studios) has further bolstered Portland’s place in contemporary cinema.
The event will be linked to the proposed Cinema Studies major at the University of Oregon, plus offer possibilities of links to other universities and film programs in the Portland area. The conference will offer course credit for Portland and Eugene students

Alfred Stieglitz/Georgia O'Keefe Archive. Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keefe first met in 1916 and they soon developed a personal and professional relationship that would last until Stieglitz's death in 1946. After his passing, O'Keefe collected much of his personal and professional correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and other items from his career. In 1949, O'Keefe decided to donate these items to the Yale University Library. Today, visitors can look through this glorious digital collection of these items, including photographs of and by Stieglitz and his circle of friends, along with paintings, drawings, letters, and various awards. The item on the homepage is worth a closer glance, as it features O'Keefe and Stieglitz in an embrace. Visitors can search the entire collection by keyword, and they can also just browse through the works here. For anyone with an interest in American arts and letters, it is a most noble and worthy find. Stieglitz Photo: "The City of Ambition"
