Board Member Wins Award. The National Watercolor Society 89th Annual Exhibit opened October 10th at the Brea Civic and Cultural Center in Brea, California. Over 1,200 paintings were submitted for this year’s show. DIVA board member Geoff McCormack’s painting, “Red Twig” was one of the 100 paintings selected by a panel of three judges. Then James Morphesis, the guest awards juror, gave McCormack's watercolor the NWS's top prize. The "NWS Purchase Award with Silver Star" and $4,000. McCormack's painting will be on a year long national tour with twenty other award winners, then it becomes part of the NWS permanent collection. Hollywood On Broad- way. The Mid-Oregon Production Arts Network (MOPAN) hosted a special exhibit of local film industry professionals and their contribution to the region on the October First Friday Art Walk. A post-Art Walk screening of locally made short films presented work by some of the region's creative film artists.

Art Talk Featured Crystal L. Scott. DIVA member Crystal L. Scott gave an art talk on October 23rd in which she discussed her emergence as an artist without formal training. Emphasis was placed on learning by doing.

Justin King Art Talk. DIVA was please to present an October 22nd illustrated Art Talk by Justin King featuring images from his first and second tours in Iraq as a freelance photographer embedded with the Oregon National Guard.
King, having last been in Iraq in August 2008, once again returned this summer to see how the situation had changed since the US began its withdrawal. Photographs from his documentary efforts have been published in the Register-Guard and the BBC News Online.
Justin says of his work, "My highest convictions about the purpose of photography lead me to documentary work. My aim is to capture events in a way that puts the viewer in touch with the scene. Through documentary photography we can hold up a mirror to the world and through that effort bring about public awareness of a situation. We can capture our mistakes and triumphs as a people and better learn about who we are now and who we hope to be. I have a deep desire to follow in the footsteps of the many photographers who have brought and are bringing the world's stories to life."
Justin King, well known as an accomplished musician, has been studying painting and photography at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland.

Steve Newcomb - Volunteer of the Month. Steve Newcomb is a member of the DIVA Media Arts Committee and has served as its' secretary for the past three years and has served as chair and co-chair of the annual OpenLens Festival. In addition, he has co-hosted the monthly Video Slam and has recently initiated DIVA's Indie Night screening of films by independent filmmakers. Steve has always been generous in his offer to help with the variety of events the Center offers. DIVA appreciates the unique contribution of time, energy, and ideas that he makes each month in helping to build a unique cinema arts program here in Eugene.
Steve notes: "Working with DIVA has offered me a chance to participate in both the local and larger community of creative artists.
Being involved with the Openlens festival since its inception has afforded me the opportunity to meet and interview many talented guest artists and community sponsors.
I have also assisted in DIVA's promotion of the Youth Visions project with presentations and demonstrations at area high schools and the University of Oregon.
This fall I started an "Indie Film Night" series in which I screen independent films. A goal is to encourage and engage audience discussion about film.
One of the greatest benefits of my association with DIVA has been my experience working with the dedicated and professional staff and volunteers. I am happy to be a part of such a wonderful and effective community organization."

Volunteer Event Assistants Needed. DIVA is in need of a cadre of volunteers who can be called upon for assistance with Center events ranging from gallery openings, receptions, ticket sales, to staffing snack bar concessions. Contact Mary Unruh if you can join this special group of volunteers. Call 344-3482.

*The distinctive shadows in this early Eugene morning sunrise were caused by the sun rising behind the Three Sisters Mountains and casing shadows across the clouds. One can see from left to right the shadow of the North Sister, Middle Sister, and South Sister. This is a rare occurrence that takes place only when the angle of the sun and cloud cover are just right to create this skyscape. Photo by Gary Ferrington, October 1, 2009.

EXHIBITS: NOVEMBER-DECEMBER
Main Gallery: Site Specific Installation by David Teng-Olson. Olsen’s recent work is made up of colorful, stream-of-consciousness drawings that are done with gel pens and gouache on wood, paper and panel.  Although inspired by years of working as a scientific illustrator, all of the drawings were begun without any specific representational idea, so as to emphasize a responsive approach to drawing, and executed using a limited mark-making vocabulary.  They are then scanned into a computer, reconsidered, and executed as a grand-scale environment.  The end result is a space that evokes feelings of sentimentality for the activities and ephemera of childhood—puzzles, video games, stickers, and doodling—yet is, at the same time, distorted and strange enough to be unfamiliar and new.

Gallery 1: From the Heart of Darkness to the Rainbow Nation: South Africa Reinvents Itself by Andries Fourie (sculpture and painting)

Andries Fourie’s work explores memory, culture, and identity in a specifically South African context.  He is interested in the dynamic cultural blending that results from the contact between traditional, predominantly rural, African cultures and the Westernized modernity of the city.  He is also interested in how history and the past shape the way South Africans define and identify themselves today.

Gallery 2 and 5: Observatory by Christina Karns and Gareth Spor (Installation).

Observatory merges intricate abstract paintings by digital artist, Christina Karns, with interactive viewing sculptures by Gareth Spor.  Visitors will be given the opportunity to step up to kaleidoscopes and magnifying lenses to peer inside and discover how the two-dimensional work has been reconfigured.  This collaboration explores the ways in which scientists and artists alike work to expand the ways in which we see and hence, understand our universe

Gallery 3: Moment to Moment by Susan Sutton (photography)

Susan Sutton’s images represent moments that remind us that we are alive in a world full of wonder.  They capture those moments when, to the artist, objects appear numinous.  This notion of the numinous is essential to her work.  The word’s origin comes from the Latin “to nod.”  It is the nod of acknowledgement to the supernatural, mysterious aspects of the world, or, as some would have it, “God’s nod.”  To Sutton, these moments often occur at the end of the day, as the late light changes her sense of the world and makes ordinary objects extraordinary.  Susan Sutton’s photographs are her way of saying thank you for this brief time in which we are able to see.

Members’ Gallery-November: Plastic Presence by Brooke Borcherding (painting and sculpture)
Plastic Presence is an exhibition that incorporates two months worth of one individual’s accumulated plastic scraps.  This body of work is a response to the physical forms and textures of the different types of plastic with which we come into contact on an almost daily basis.  Although aesthetically interesting and diverse, this detritus is invasive, frequently non-biodegradable, and harmful to the environment.  This notion is manifest in the net forms used in the work, which symbolize how we as a society are ensnared by items of convenience that, when discarded, wreak havoc on our world.

MEDIA ARTS: SOUND IN CONTEXT
Film: Sound in Context. Sound in Context is a short documentary exploring the unique practice of sound within the visual arts world. Through conversations with a number of key art institutions/galleries, artists and curators working with sound in the UK and abroad, Sound in Context allows practitioners to discuss some of the issues of presenting and exhibiting sound in the gallery and contemporary art domain.
Sound as a medium is time-based and is sensitive to space, perception/experience and environment, and has become intertwined with disciplines of sculpture, architecture, installation, film and media art. The ephemeral, invisible nature of sound poses a number of challenges within cultural practice and presentation. Situated between practices of music and art, sound overflows boundaries of the gallery, disrupts the line between stage and audience, moves beyond categorizations, and merges models of economy and culture industry.
Sound in Context explores the place and future of sound within an expanded arts milieu, while opening up reflections for sound artists engaging in the art world, and visual artists engaging with sound in their work. The film includes interviews with: Seth Cluett (artist), Benedict Drew (artist/curator), Barry Esson (director, Arika), Anne Hilde Neset (deputy editor, The Wire), Hans Ulrich Obrist (co-director, Serpentine Gallery), Mike Stubbs (director, FACT), David Toop (writer/curator), Richard Whitelaw (programme director, Sonic Arts Network)
Produced by: Jonathan Webb and Ashley Wong. Thanks to: The Jerwood Space, Goldsmiths' University of London, Sonic Arts Network, Nicolas Sauret, Arika, FACT Liverpool, Serpentine Gallery, The Wire and Arika. Total runtime: 30min, 2009. This film is archived on the VIMEO web site.

OPPORTUNITIES:
Event: November 6-7, 2009 What is Film? Change & Continuity in the 21st Century
Turnbull Center, Portland, Oregon

What is film? What is the future of film? How are digital technologies changing the nature and production of film? What is the future of Hollywood? How is the Internet changing the film industry’s models of production, distribution and consumption?
Films are now produced using a wide range of digital technologies, distributed via the Internet, mobile devices, and miscellaneous videodisc formats, and are viewed at the convenience of consumers. Change is everywhere.
Even with these alterations to the nature of cinema, we still refer to “film.” Hollywood still distributes its products to motion picture theaters and television outlets, and is still motivated primarily by profit. Some things haven’t changed. Yet.
This conference will feature a unique coalescing of film professionals, film and media scholars and students, government and community officials, as well as film fans. The event will feature keynote speakers, roundtables, paper presentations, screenings, receptions and workshops, in an attempt to answer questions about the changing nature of cinema.
Oregon and the city of Portland are no strangers to cinema with several recent Hollywood productions being filmed in and around the city. Likewise, burgeoning independent film and art scene sets it apart from its other U.S. cities. The release of the 3-D stop-motion animation sensation Coraline (produced by Laika Studios) has further bolstered Portland’s place in contemporary cinema.
The event will be linked to the proposed Cinema Studies major at the University of Oregon, plus offer possibilities of links to other universities and film programs in the Portland area. The conference will offer course credit for Portland and Eugene students

WEB EXPLORATIONS: AMAZING WALL MURALS
The 50 Most Stunning Wall Murals From Around The World. The painting of murals is often thought to be a modern, urban phenomenon, but, in fact, it’s nothing of the sort. People have been painting murals for millennia and some ancient murals, preserved in tombs in Egypt and under piles of ash in Pompeii, are still visible today.
In 2009, people feel compelled to paint murals for much the same reasons as they did thousands of years ago: to make a political statement, promote a particular ideology, commemorate a historical figure or loved one, or simply get their artwork seen by hundreds, if not thousands, on a daily basis.
Here you will find images of some of the most incredible murals the world has to offer. Most are hand painted, with ordinary or spray paint, while some have been printed onto plastic or paper and “stuck” onto the wall. While the painting of murals is often contentious (one man’s masterpiece is another’s act of vandalism), we’re sure people wouldn’t object to having most of these fantastic works of art on display in their towns and cities.
