DIVA and DAVIS' Partnership Recogni-zed. The first annual Arts and Business Alliance of Eugene breakfast, held at the Hult Center on November 6th, recognized five unique partnerships between the arts and regional businesses. It is the mutual collaboration between DIVA and DAVIS's Restaurant that was highlighted as one example of business and arts cooperation in downtown Eugene. About the ABA of Eugene. Five key organizations have joined forces to found the Arts and Business Alliance of Eugene. The City of Eugene, University of Oregon, The Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce, Travel lane County and Lane Community College have aligned to create a unique collaboration that will bring the strengths of the arts and business sections together to enhance the economic health and livability of our community.
Through vision, leadership and service the ABA of Eugene is dedicated to enriching the cultural life of our community be acting as a catalyst for creating dynamic premierships between the arts, culture and business sectors. DIVA is represented on the ABA by Board President Randy Stender. (Source: ABA of Eugene).

How Your Community Can Thrive Through The Arts. On November 6th DIVA hosted Randy Cohen, a member of the staff of Americans For The Arts, who gave an informal town hall-style overview of how Americans for the Arts combines the strengths of research, advocacy, and professional development to ensure that communities across America thrive through the arts.    Randy is among the most noted experts in the field of arts funding, research, policy, and using the arts to address community development.
The session was sponsored by the UO Center for Community Arts & Cultural Policy and UO Emerging Leaders in the Arts Network. You can download two documents from his presentation: (1) Map of arts related businesses in Eugene, and (2) Copy of his Power Point presentation given at the Arts and Business Alliance meeting.

Included is work by some of Eugene's most distinguished artists including: Barry Geller, Dan Chen, Ruth Von Büren, Lin Cook, Stephen White, Ellen Tykeson, Steve Reinmuth, Terry McIlrath, Kate Bollons, Gladys Bacon-Rust, Jerry Ross, Renee Manford,  and Adrienne Adam.
The DIVA Holiday Annex is located at 80 East Broadway. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday from noon-5:00PM and by appointment. Call: 344-3482. The Annex will be open through December 23rd. All sales support DIVA.

DIVA Internships and Supervised Field Practicums Clarified. The DIVA Board has clarified the purpose of professional internships and supervised field practicums available for students at the Center.
A professional internship will be available for qualified graduate students when a DIVA project requires skilled and knowledgeable assistants.
Supervised field practicums will be available to undergraduates who are interested in learning about the daily operation of a non-profit arts center.
The number of internships and practicums will very throughout the year. Opportunities will be on file at DIVA.

December Volunteer of the Month. Karen Alvarado has been recognized as the December volunteer of the month. Mary Unruh notes that Karen has installed shows for DIVA both at the Gallery at the Airport and the DIVA Holiday Annex.
As a former gallery owner in California, she has a perfect eye for color and proportion that makes both shows professional and appealing. In addition, Karen served on the Open Studios Art Tours Committee for 2009. She’s been a terrific help in making DIVA an organization with a professional appearance.
Karen writes about her interest in art and DIVA, "I bought my first oil when I was 18; total infatuation followed.
I believe that the only thing that lasts through time is art--power evaporates, politics disappoint, empires crumble but the visual record created by humanity endures.
Passion, thought, beliefs and customs are displayed in cave paintings, museums, attics, churches, galleries, and homes.  Art is alive and can bring life to everything it touches.  This includes invigorating deserted downtown and city centers.  Store fronts filled with vibrant art call out in areas as different as the neighborhoods of San Pedro, CA, and Chelsea, NYC. Alexandria, VA, Portland, OR, and Long Beach, CA, have incorporated the visual arts and the visual arts community into the renaissance of their downtowns.
Why DIVA?  Because DIVA is a critical component in bringing life back to downtown Eugene."

David Teng Olson at DIVA. A new installation now on view at DIVA is the largest single work in the six year history of the Center. The wall mural by David Teng Olsen, currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Media Arts at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, took six days to install with the help of assistant artists. The installation covers three walls of DIVA's large Main Gallery. Read more about David Teng Olsen in the Exhibits section below. Watch slide show about the installation process.

Cinematic Poet At DIVA. DIVA's Film Forum will host Portland filmmaker and cinematic poet Chel White on Friday, December 11th at 7:00 PM. Admission $6.00.
Mr. White is an internationally recognized and honored filmmaker and DIVA is pleased to present a retrospective of his 20 years in film. His visit is funded through a grant from the Chambers Family Foundation.
Chel's work explores love, obsession, alienation, memories, and dreams. He uses allegory and frequently black humor to paint indelible pictures of the human experience. His narrative films are often told from the perspective of the estranged individual, the outsider looking in. Described as a cinematic poet, his work is intricate, sublime, and beautiful. Dreams and dream-influenced imagery are ongoing resources in his work. With a background in experimental film and animation, his short films consistently defy categorization.
From Sundance to Berlin to Hong Kong, Chel White's films have been exhibited in film festivals all over the world, and recognized with numerous awards. His work has screened at the Smithsonian Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the High Museum in Atlanta. Two commissioned projects White directed are in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

DIVA To Close Galleries for Remodeling. A major remodeling project will close the Center's gallery areas at the end of the current exhibit and will remain closed during the month of January. Event programming such as film screenings, performances, art talks, and other activities will continue unaffected by the construction.
Galleries 1 and 2 will be combined into one large exhibit space including the area now occupied by the often congested east hallway. Gallery 4 will be refurbished and become the new Member's Gallery. A major new show, Young Visionaries, will open in these new spaces in February (see next article).

Young Visionaries To Open In February. On Friday 5 February 2010, DIVA Center will unveil our newly renovated gallery space with Young Visionaries, an exhibition that will introduce Eugene to the work of some of the most promising emerging artists from across the country.  This interdisciplinary group show will present approximately 15 artists showing a total of approximately 35 works throughout all three of our major exhibition spaces.
We at DIVA are extremely excited about the opportunity that this show will provide for the large community of art lovers in Eugene to experience some of the most cutting-edge contemporary art being produced today by the art stars of the future. The majority of exhibiting artists will be making their Eugene debut from the East Coast, Midwest, Portland, San Francisco, and Canada.  Artists already confirmed include Kristin Beaver from Detroit, and Joshua Newth from Toronto/Detroit. Art Pour Favor Fund Raising Event. The second annual wine bottling fundraiser, Art Pour Favor, was held Sunday, November 8th at the Rain Song Winery near Creswell.
Participants enjoyed bottling a unique blend of two Pinot Noir vintages ('07-'08) of Rain Song Estate-grown grapes. Each person received two bottles of wine and a great BBQ lunch provided by Tenold Peterson and Geoffrey McCormack.

OpenLens 2004 Winner now on IMDB. The film, "Food", which as the 2004 OpenLens Film festival winner by Thaddeous Konar is now listed on IMDB.

EXHIBITS: DECEMBER
Main Gallery: Site Specific Installation by David Teng-Olson. Olsen’s recent work is made up of colorful, stream-of-consciousness drawings that are done with gel pens and gouache on wood, paper and panel.  Although inspired by years of working as a scientific illustrator, all of the drawings were begun without any specific representational idea, so as to emphasize a responsive approach to drawing, and executed using a limited mark-making vocabulary.  They are then scanned into a computer, reconsidered, and executed as a grand-scale environment.  The end result is a space that evokes feelings of sentimentality for the activities and ephemera of childhood—puzzles, video games, stickers, and doodling—yet is, at the same time, distorted and strange enough to be unfamiliar and new.

Gallery 1: From the Heart of Darkness to the Rainbow Nation: South Africa Reinvents Itself by Andries Fourie (sculpture and painting)

Andries Fourie’s work explores memory, culture, and identity in a specifically South African context.  He is interested in the dynamic cultural blending that results from the contact between traditional, predominantly rural, African cultures and the Westernized modernity of the city.  He is also interested in how history and the past shape the way South Africans define and identify themselves today.

Gallery 2 and 5: Observatory by Christina Karns and Gareth Spor (Installation).

Observatory merges intricate abstract paintings by digital artist, Christina Karns, with interactive viewing sculptures by Gareth Spor.  Visitors will be given the opportunity to step up to kaleidoscopes and magnifying lenses to peer inside and discover how the two-dimensional work has been reconfigured.  This collaboration explores the ways in which scientists and artists alike work to expand the ways in which we see and hence, understand our universe

Gallery 3: Moment to Moment by Susan Sutton (photography)

Susan Sutton’s images represent moments that remind us that we are alive in a world full of wonder.  They capture those moments when, to the artist, objects appear numinous.  This notion of the numinous is essential to her work.  The word’s origin comes from the Latin “to nod.”  It is the nod of acknowledgement to the supernatural, mysterious aspects of the world, or, as some would have it, “God’s nod.”  To Sutton, these moments often occur at the end of the day, as the late light changes her sense of the world and makes ordinary objects extraordinary.  Susan Sutton’s photographs are her way of saying thank you for this brief time in which we are able to see.

Members’ Gallery-December: Paintings by Sandra Kay Bulley

Bulley is an Oregon artist who embraces the modern art movement. She states "after trying several different painting mediums I finally found my niche in contemporary art which was quite liberating for me."
Sandra employs various applications and materials in her work, but her pieces always consist of "color, texture, layering, movement, and a little drama."

December - Great Hall Installation by artists Kira Burge and Jessica Hickey

"The Great Hall" is an installation questioning the value disparity between original art objects and economically accessible reproductions by critiquing the multi-million dollar endeavor that Scotland has undertaken to reweave "The Hunt of the Unicorn" tapestries.
Through the act of translation; taking digital images of the French tapestries and weaving them using a computer AVL Jacquard loom, Burge and Hickey have created wall hangings that give the viewer an impression of "The Hunt of the Unicorn" tapestries.
The woven wall hangings are installed in the Downtown Initiative of the Visual Arts’ hallway, which has been transformed in a do-it-yourself manor complete with vinyl flooring and a new coat of paint simulating the space where the Scottish versions of the tapestries currently hang.
An opening reception will be held from 5-8PM on December 4th. Both artists will be attending to answer questions and speak about their work.

MEDIA ARTS:
Animate Projects. Based in the United Kingdom, the Animate Projects site is designed to "explore the relationship between art and animation, and the place of animation and its concepts in contemporary art practice." With support from the Arts Council England and Channel 4, they have created this delightful site featuring over 100 films that "explore ideas around animation." On the homepage, visitors can view a rotating selection of these projects, and they are also encouraged to click on the "Films" section to browse through films dating back to 1991. Moving on, visitors can click on the "Events" section to learn about relevant screenings around Britain, lectures, and workshops. Cineastes will want to delve into the "Writing" area, which includes critical responses to some of the works which can be viewed elsewhere on the site. To get a taste of the offerings here, first-time users may wish to view "Amnesia" by Cordelia Swann or Alex Schady's work, "Everything Must Go". Visit Animate Projects site.

WEB EXPLORATIONS: AMAZING WALL MURALS
The 50 Most Stunning Wall Murals From Around The World. The painting of murals is often thought to be a modern, urban phenomenon, but, in fact, it’s nothing of the sort. People have been painting murals for millennia and some ancient murals, preserved in tombs in Egypt and under piles of ash in Pompeii, are still visible today.
In 2009, people feel compelled to paint murals for much the same reasons as they did thousands of years ago: to make a political statement, promote a particular ideology, commemorate a historical figure or loved one, or simply get their artwork seen by hundreds, if not thousands, on a daily basis.
Here you will find images of some of the most incredible murals the world has to offer. Most are hand painted, with ordinary or spray paint, while some have been printed onto plastic or paper and “stuck” onto the wall. While the painting of murals is often contentious (one man’s masterpiece is another’s act of vandalism), we’re sure people wouldn't object to having most of these fantastic works of art on display in their towns and cities.
