100 For $100 Gallery by G. Ferrington
Fundraising Success. DIVA's first annual 100 for $100 fundraising event was a great success with nearly all tickets sold raising close to $10,000 that will go toward supporting the Center's exhibit and program activities. DIVA would like to thank the 5th Street Market and vendors who supported the event. Kudos also go to all those artists who contributed their work to the fundraiser and the many volunteers who made this exciting evening possible. (Photos: Top - 100 for $100 gallery display in the former Nike store at the 5th Street Market. Left - 100 for $100 banner welcomes patrons to the fundraising event.)

Planning the gARTen Party. (By Linda Gonzales). Plans for the 2010 gARTen Party are shaping up nicely.    There is a strong group of core volunteers planning a fun and memorable event this year and we are hoping for a large turnout.
Especially encouraging is the fantastic location which will be Ray and Catharine Beard's beautiful sculpture garden. Think lush flower beds amidst tall fir trees, along meandering pathways, which spill out into a sunny hillside meadow. Beside the pathways throughout the garden are sprinkled structural and playful sculpture. you won't want to miss this special fundraising party.
Start planning now for the premiere event of the summer on Saturday July 17th starting around 5:00pm. Tickets will be available for purchase starting April 30th online and at DIVA. It will truly be a "Midsummer night's dream"!! Keep informed - visit the gARTen Party web site for updates. (Photo: Linda Gonzales)

Opposites In Har- mony. DIVA member artists Sisy Anderson and Scott Huette have opened their exhibit Opposites in Harmony at the Rose Springs Center in Hillsboro, Oregon. The exhibit explores the Inward & Outward, the Feminine & Masculine, and the Magnetic & Dynamic flow of energies.
Along with paintings and photographs from each artist, the show features an installation created collaboratively by Scott and Sisy. “Remembrances” showcases three 8 foot handmade scrolls each a hand painted photograph on rice paper. (Photo: Scott Huette)

New Gallery Shows At DIVA. DIVA is opening three new shows during the First Friday Art Walk on April 2nd. The Revenant Archives explores the visual and material culture of the paranormal. Regionalism: New Art By North American Printmakers is an exhibition of work on paper that will provide an overview of new experimental printmaking. And, Claudia Patton's acrylic on canvas paintings will be on view in the Member's Gallery. ( See: Exhibits section below for full April-May shows at DIVA)

Call For Committee Volunteers. DIVA members interested in serving on the Artist Services and Open Studios Art Tour committees should contact Mary Unruh at 541-344-3482. These are two important committees charged with expanding DIVA's mission to serve the area's art community. DIVA is also seeking volunteers for Gallery hosting and the Media Arts Committee that plans film events throughout the year.

Eugene Art Museum Committee Formed . DIVA member Jerry Ross has formed a citizen's committee seeking to purchase the historical downtown post office for use as a City of Eugene Art/Historical Museum.  This is a grass-roots, artist-based committee.  Anyone interested in participating on the committee should contact Jerry via email at ross@rio.com. Ross notes that congressman DeFazio's office is assisting in this effort.

First Friday Art Walk - April 2nd. Join Lane Arts Council for First Friday ArtWalk on April 2nd, guest-hosted by Storm Kennedy, of KUGN's Morning Show. The downtown Eugene tour begins at 5:30 p.m. at Imagine Gallery, 35 E. 8th, followed by hosted stops at Goldworks, Passionflower, New Zone, and a special final stop at the future space of Lord Leebrick Theater on Broadway as the group unveils its renovation plans for creating its new home at 194 W. Broadway. And, of course, DIVA will be open and hosting a reception for three new shows. See the Exhibits section below for details.

Volunteer Of The Month. Tom Blank, a retired Hollywood writer and director, has been offering his knowledge and talents to DIVA in the area of media arts for several years.
He has spearheaded the Great Directors and Behind the Lens programs which offer classic films and insight into their history.
He is the co-creator of our Shaggy Dog project, an offshoot of the screenwriters workshops that he also founded. The Shaggy Dog works with aspiring media artists to take them through the process of producing a film from concept to finished product.
Mary Unruh notes that, "Tom is one of the most knowledgeable person I know on the history of films. DIVA benefits from his knowledge, talent and financial contributions to our media arts program. We appreciate his role in keeping our media arts offerings pertinent and vital for this community.”
Tom says about his experience at DIVA, "I feel DIVA provides a unique opportunity to combine the visual arts in a unique way.  It's significant to me that I get to offer instruction in film within an institution where the inter connectivity of the arts is assumed.  As I talk about the art and the craft of film (two separate but interrelated disciplines) I am reminded that the visual aspects of composition, light and shadow and other elements of "mise en scene" are just as important as story structure or effective, surprising dialogue.  The art of the director is the art of looking, and the great directors are celebrated the unique tone of experience that their particular "gaze" enables them to deliver, much the same as a great painter."

Sketchbooks In Italy Summer Workshop. DIVA supporter Kenneth O'Connell will be teaching a Sketchbooks In Italy workshop August 18 to September 1 at the LaRomita School of Art in Umbria, Italy.
Ken will take 16-18 people with him for two weeks in the hill towns of Italy. Workshop cost is $3,450.00 for art instruction, room and board, and local transportation. Airfare is not included. Participants are picked up from the Rome airport on August 18 before noon and returned to the airport on September 1, 2010 before 10:00am.
Individuals interested in participating in this workshop should contact Ken at Ken@copicmarker.com or by cell 541-953-0190. (Photo: Ken O'Connell)

DIVA alters submission rules for its video slam. Shoot It! Show It! Watch It! — DIVA's monthly Video Slam is changing its approach to screenings beginning with the April program.
Entries must be submitted by the first of the month to be screened on the third Wednesday. Filmmakers should plan to submit short videos by April 1 in order to have them screen on April 21.
The slam is Eugene’s only all-ages showcase for film and video art. The new approach allows DIVA more lead time to organize its programs.
Videographers should submit their films on a DVD. Label the DVD with video’s name, contact information, title and length. Short works are encouraged, but longer videos are accepted and scheduled as time permits.
The audience selects the best video each month, with winners showing at the year-end “best of” event.
Mail or hand-deliver entries to DIVA, 110 W. Broadway, Eugene, OR 97401.

EXHIBITS: APRIL - MAY
THE REVENANT ARCHIVES
Presented by: Kristen Gallerneaux, Chief Archivist
On view: Galleries 1, 2, 3, and 5

The Revenant Archives is an institution concerned with the visual and material culture of the paranormal.  Consisting of artifacts, documents, ephemera, works on paper, and reconstructions, it uses folkloristic, parapsychological, and scientific means to offer new interpretations of ambiguous situations and to investigate the conflicts and byproducts of belief in society.
Through a fusion of historical methodologies and contemporary art practices, the Archive attempts to neutrally explore the blurring of boundaries between past and present, truth and fiction, and physical and spiritual reality.  As Chief Archivist, Kristen Gallerneaux has presented a number of traveling exhibits, public lectures, and maintains the holdings of the physical archive space.

Kristen Gallerneaux was raised in a Spiritualist household near Paincourt, Ontario - a French Canadian village named after its 18th Century bread shortage. Upon relocation to Detroit in 2006, she began her work with the Revenant Archives, a project dedicated to the exploration and history of the supernatural.

After completing an MFA in Printmaking at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, Kristen began her tenure as a MA Folklore student at the University of Oregon in 2009. Her current areas of research include: paranormal societies, idiosyncratic museums, cultural processes that emerge out of urban decay, and “visual legendry.” She believes these explorations will be a lifelong project.

CLAUDIA PATTON ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
On view: Member's Gallery through April.

Patton notes that, "Color and sound, rhythm and pattern are a non-verbal language. I paint with acrylic on canvas while listening to music. The flow and rhythm of the music (a great variety of artists and musical styles) creates an ideal space for me to move outside of judgment into inspired free flow. I wish to communicate the experience of pure joy, which is at the core of each piece of art I create." Show continues through April.
