MAY Art Talk Featured Elizabeth Parr. DIVA Member artist Elizabeth Parr provided insight into her current exhibit and personal artistic pro- cesses during a May 22nd Art Talk.
Her series of paintings, based on the poem "The Roving Rats" by Heinrich Heine, is on exhibit in DIVA's Members' Gallery through June. Parr's paintings and drawings reflect her working with mixed media including acrylic, graphite, collage, wax, found objects, masking tape and Xerox transfer.
Parr is a Studio Coordinator with the University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

Area Art Organiz- ations Receive ABAE Award. When economic un- certainty and budget constraints at the airport threatened the survival of the Gallery at the Airport, an exhibit space on the second floor landing of the Eugene Airport, community members Randy Stender (DIVA President) and Dottie Chase worked quickly to put together a consortium of local non-profit arts organizations to manage the gallery.
These four local arts organizations – the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA), Emerald Art Center, Lane Community College Division of the Arts and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art – came together in early 2009 to form the Gallery at the Airport Partnership, ensuring that the airport would have a permanent space for the exhibition of visual art and artifacts reflecting the artistic and cultural resources of the community. Each organization even agreed to provide an exhibition for the gallery during the first year of their partnership.
Not only does the gallery provide a dynamic and enthusiastic greeting to the more than 717,000 passengers who pass through the Eugene Airport every year, it also creates a more engaging work environment for airport employees, strengthens the overall image of the region as rich in cultural assets, supports the creative work of our local artists and raises awareness about local arts organizations and special events throughout the community, which in turn strengthens our community’s quality of life.
Thanks to their vision, determination and creativity, the Gallery at the Airport Partnership is contributing to the overall cultural and economic vitality of the Eugene community.

DIVA Receives Award. The Bishop and Fentress Endowment Committee of The Arts Foundation of Western Oregon of The Oregon Community Foundation has announce the recipients of the 2010 Fentress Endowment Award.   As always the competition for these awards was great and it was difficult to choose only one recipient.   This year, the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA), was selected and will receive the award on June 4, 2010 at the Arts and Business Alliance of Eugene’s Brava Breakfast.

Film Festival Committee Opportunity. Do you have an interest in helping to plan and stage Eugene's only winter short film festival?  This is your opportunity to be involved!
The DIVA Center is looking for individuals who would like to participate in organizing and implementing the Center's annual OpenLens Festival to be held January 28-30, 2011.
DIVA's Seventh Annual OpenLens Festival is a celebration of the independent spirit in filmmaking. It has become an umbrella event that hosts two juried events including the OpenLens Short Film Competition and Youth Visions' Teen Video Challenge. The festival includes seminars, screenings, receptions and a special guest filmmaker/host.
OpenLens 2011 is a regional festival that focuses on the emerging film-video artists from the mid-Willamette Valley to Southwest Oregon. It is a small event dedicated to the showcasing of new work and providing the opportunity for filmmakers to network.
OpenLens 2011 planning begins soon and individuals interested in program development, film selection, and event management are welcome to join the Center's Media Arts committee in organizing the 2011 event.
Interested? Contact Eric Ostlind, DIVA Program Director, at 541-344-3482 or divaprograms@gmail.com. See festival details at divacenter.org (click on OpenLens 2011).

June VOM Recog- nized. Shannon Hardin, DIVA's Volunteer Co- ordinator, has recog- nized and congratulates Charles Thielman as the June Volunteer of the Month.
Charles, Shannon notes, helps not only gallery hosting, but First Friday events and special occasions such as the recent 100 for $100 fundraising part held at the former Nike Store in the 5th Street Market. She appreciates the many contributions Charles makes through his active volunteer participation.
Charles says of his experiences at DIVA, "I'm much enjoying the benefits of working as a volunteer at DIVA, a gallery collectively supported by a community of artists, reaping a river of on-going inspiration certainly is one major benefit!
Being a member of a gallery co-op and an activist organization so committed to building a larger arts presence in downtown Eugene enables me to use my skills, working with others for one very good cause.
In organizing & hosting Poetry Readings at DIVA, I'm also furthering the close relationship Poetry has with the Visual Arts-- the free poems box we recently installed in DIVA's lobby is the first in an Eugene gallery, and will be stocked with poems by Artist-Poets such as Marsden Hartley. The Poetry Box Project also links DIVA to the Oregon State Poetry Assosciation and the Lane Literary Guild-- organizations with many families of art appreciators.
And, in being an active member of DIVA, I've enlarged my family and strengthened my commitment to the Eugene community as a whole!"

DIVA Member Exhibits in New York. Carla Crow has an exhibit of her work on display at the Bullet Space Gallery from June 4 through July 2. Her work is part of an exhibit by Crow and four other artists. For more information check ou the Slaon Foxy web site.

EXHIBITS: JUNE - Exhibits Held Over
THE REVENANT ARCHIVES
Presented by: Kristen Gallerneaux, Chief Archivist
On view: Galleries 1, 2, 3, and 5

The Revenant Archives is an institution concerned with the visual and material culture of the paranormal.  Consisting of artifacts, documents, ephemera, works on paper, and reconstructions, it uses folkloristic, parapsychological, and scientific means to offer new interpretations of ambiguous situations and to investigate the conflicts and byproducts of belief in society.
Through a fusion of historical methodologies and contemporary art practices, the Archive attempts to neutrally explore the blurring of boundaries between past and present, truth and fiction, and physical and spiritual reality.  As Chief Archivist, Kristen Gallerneaux has presented a number of traveling exhibits, public lectures, and maintains the holdings of the physical archive space.

Kristen Gallerneaux was raised in a Spiritualist household near Paincourt, Ontario - a French Canadian village named after its 18th Century bread shortage. Upon relocation to Detroit in 2006, she began her work with the Revenant Archives, a project dedicated to the exploration and history of the supernatural.

After completing an MFA in Printmaking at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, Kristen began her tenure as a MA Folklore student at the University of Oregon in 2009. Her current areas of research include: paranormal societies, idiosyncratic museums, cultural processes that emerge out of urban decay, and “visual legendry.” She believes these explorations will be a lifelong project.

WEB EXPLORATIONS:

Art Through Time: A Global View
How do we understand art? What is the relationship between art and the society from which it comes? These are but a few of the questions explored by this fine thirteen-part series produced by the Annenberg Media group. The motivating principle behind the series is to explore "diverse cultural perspectives on shared human experiences." Visitors will note that each program has a theme, and visitors can watch the entire program sequentially, or just bounce around as they see fit. Some of these themes include "Dreams and Visions", "Converging Cultures", and "Portraits". Alongside each video program, visitors will find select images that reflect the themes of each program, and it's fun to look at these images before and after a viewing. The "Compare" area allows visitors the opportunity to look at two works of art side-by-side and consider questions like "How can art inspire technical innovation?" and "How can hybrid art define individual identity?"
