DIVA In July. The Center's exhibit program is on hiatus during the month of July. However, DIVA's arts programming that includes film screenings, spoken arts, and other activities will continue throughout the month. Check the DIVA Calendar for scheduled events and come downtown for an enjoyable summer experience at the Center.

NOW is the time for you to show your support for DIVA!
This is our annual membership drive which coincides with our fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. We’ve shifted to this model because it streamlines our administration processes and saves us time so we can focus our efforts on providing the services and programs you enjoy through DIVA. Your enrollment will keep your membership current until June 30, 2011.
Your support is essential to our success. Memberships provide 30% of our operating budget, which is currently a “bare bones” $120,000 . A successful membership drive will allow us to do a better job of serving YOU -- the professional artists, art lovers, film buffs, aspiring film artists, emerging artists, and community members who believe that downtown Eugene could be a better place with a stronger art economy.
DIVA is doing a good job. On June 4th, we received the Fentress Award from the Arts Foundation of Western Oregon. This is truly an honor and a validation of the work we are doing. YOU are an important part of our success as volunteers, donors, members, patrons and customers. It’s YOU we listen to when we plan programs and events. Even our fundraisers are designed to further our mission as a catalyst for encouraging downtown art development.
Membership has its benefits: Discounts on art supplies and events, invitations to member only activities, opportunities such as our Members Gallery, links from our website to yours, newsletters and updates, and eligibility to influence DIVA’s growth through participation on committees. The biggest benefit of all is the success of a vital arts nexus in downtown Eugene.
Become a member of DIVA. Membership is only $60 a year, $40 if you are over 60 or a student. It’s a small amount to support all we do. Better yet, include a “little extra” to help us grow! It’s all tax deductible and it supports the art you enjoy downtown. Fill out the short survey on the back of the membership card, and let us know how we can do our job even better.
You can renew or become a DIVA member online. Visit the DIVA Membership page to learn more.

In 2001, The United Nations recognized the Florence Biennial as an official partner in their program "Dialog Among Civilizations". In 2009 the Biennial had participation from over 700 artists from 78 nations. The Biennial is organized under the European Parliment recognition, the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic with the official endorsement of the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Tuscany, the Province and City of Florence.
Ross was also recently notified by the Director of the American Academy of Rome that he had been accepted as a visiting artist/scholar for Nov-Dec 2010 (3 weeks).

THE REVENANT ARCHIVES
Presented by: Kristen Gallerneaux, Chief Archivist
On view: Galleries 1, 2, 3, and 5
The Revenant Archives is an institution concerned with the visual and material culture of the paranormal. Consisting of artifacts, documents, ephemera, works on paper, and reconstructions, it uses folkloristic, parapsychological, and scientific means to offer new interpretations of ambiguous situations and to investigate the conflicts and byproducts of belief in society.
Through a fusion of historical methodologies and contemporary art practices, the Archive attempts to neutrally explore the blurring of boundaries between past and present, truth and fiction, and physical and spiritual reality. As Chief Archivist, Kristen Gallerneaux has presented a number of traveling exhibits, public lectures, and maintains the holdings of the physical archive space.
Kristen Gallerneaux was raised in a Spiritualist household near Paincourt, Ontario - a French Canadian village named after its 18th Century bread shortage. Upon relocation to Detroit in 2006, she began her work with the Revenant Archives, a project dedicated to the exploration and history of the supernatural.
After completing an MFA in Printmaking at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, Kristen began her tenure as a MA Folklore student at the University of Oregon in 2009. Her current areas of research include: paranormal societies, idiosyncratic museums, cultural processes that emerge out of urban decay, and “visual legendry.” She believes these explorations will be a lifelong project.

| The Good Old "New Hollywood"
The DIVA/LCC Behind The Lens Film seminar continues this summer with screenings at DIVA on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM. Admission: LCC Registration or $3 donation at the door. Tom Blank, Seminar host and discussion leader.
When the "Nouvelle Vague" or "New Wave" swept European screens with the work of Godard and Truffaut, American studios responded by bankrolling movies by unknown directors dealing with "unfilmable" subject matter. This was the "Decade Under the Influence," the movement celebrated as the era of "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls." This partial selection of films, some famous, some almost forgotten, samples the audacity of the "New Hollywood" directors who today are "the old guard."
The summer films include:
June 22 - "Midnight Cowboy" (1969) Director: John Schlessinger. Starring Jon Voight, and Dustin Hoffman. This film challenged prevailing norms of sexual freedom, and it became the first (only) X-Rated movie ever to win the Oscar for best film.
June 29 - "The Last Picture Show" (1971) Director: Peter Bogdanovich. Starring Jeff Bridges and Cybil Shepherd. The loss of innocence in a small Texas town.
July 6 - "Harold and Maude" (1971) Director: Hal Ashby. Starring Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort. A comedy of sex, death and unexpected love.
July 13 - "Mean Streets" (1972) Director Martin Scorsese. Starring Harvey Keitel and Robert DiNiro. New York is a dangerous place for Robert DiNiro in Scorsese's semi-autobiographical story of first generation Italian Americans.
July 20 - "The Conversation" (1974) Director: Francis Ford Coppola. Starring Gene Hackman and John Cazale. Coppola's exploration of the morality of privacy was made between Godfather I and Godfather II, and was nominated for best picture of the year.
July 27 - "The Sugarland Express" (1974) Director Steven Spielberg. Starring Goldie Hawn and Ben Johnson. Goldie Hawn springs her husband out of jail and kidnaps a Texas State Trooper in Spielberg's first feature film. |

"One Step Big Shot: Portraits by Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant", continues through September 5, 2010. Behind a Polaroid camera Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant probed innumerable acquaintances and strangers in the process of crafting their art—Warhol’s paintings and screenprints of people and objects and Van Sant’s characters in film. Warhol’s portraits were transformed into iconic Pop images. Van Sant’s Polaroid pictures helped him cast characters for his films. In reflection these one-step photographs became indelible images. NW Artist Dale Chihuly. On one level, Dale Chihuly can be lauded for moving the Studio Glass movement from its original premise of the solitary artist working in a studio environment to embracing the more established modus operandus within the art world of collaborative endeavors and a division of labor within the creative process. However, Chihuly's contribution to the field extends well beyond this. His practice of putting together teams of artists with exceptional glassblowing skills has led to the development of complex, multipart sculptures of dramatic beauty and scale that place him in the leadership role of moving blown glass out of the confines of the small, precious object and into the realm of large-scale sculpture and environmental art. In fact, Chihuly deserves much of the credit for establishing the blown glass form as an accepted medium for installation art and, hence, for contemporary expression in late twentieth and twenty-first century art generally.
