August Sunset by G. Ferrington |
DIVA To Host Film Community. “Flickering Images and Silver Screens” is the theme of a special DIVA open house event during the First Friday Art Walk from 5:30PM to 8:00 PM on August 6th. The Center will be hosting an informational evening showcasing many of the area’s film organizations that present film festivals, teach about film, and promote professional film, video, and media arts production.
The evening’s goal is to share with the public the growing diversity of film and video programming and activities in our community.
Confirmed participants with hosted tables, many with audiovisual presentations sampling their programs, include: Mid-Oregon Production Arts Network (MOPAN), The Archeology Channel’s International Film Festival, The Eugene International Film Festival, the University of Oregon’s Cinema Pacific, The Eugene Celebration Film Festival, DisOrient Asian American Film Festival, and DIVA’s own OpenLens Festival, Behind The Lens Film Seminar, Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge and The Shaggy Dog Project film production workshop.
Then, at 8:15, the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) and DIVA hosts the first program in The ArchaeologyFest Film Series: Best of 2010 with "Chumpi's Adventure" and "Lost Nation: The Ioway". These are two of the jury-selected films from The Archaeology Channel’s International Film and Video Festival held this past spring. Doors open at 7:45. Admission: $6. Other programs in this fundraising series follow on August 7th, 13th, and 14th.
gARTen Party A Success! DIVA celebrated it’s Fourth Annual gARTen Party on July 17 at the lovely estate of Ray and Catherine Beard on Sky High Drive in Springfield. Fifty people joined us for an evening of wine and food provided by many local restaurants, and, of course, the setting among the Beard’s fabulous gardens and sculptures.
A beautiful summer’s day faded into a pleasant Midsummer Night’s evening with the help of SRT students of LCC’s drama department who performed vignettes from that wonderful Shakespeare play. Patty Lynn, John and Linda Gonzales and their helpers served a fabulous dinner to our guests.
Our sincere thanks to John and Linda Gonzales who co-chaired the event, Patty Lynn who coordinated the food and its service, and Chauncey and Paula Freeman who handled garden set up and gorgeous flowers.

BEHIND THE LENS FILM SEMINAR
August Screenings – Tuesdays 7:00PM
DIVA 110 W. Broadway – Eugene
541-344-3482/divacenter.org
This is a LCC Community Education class at DIVA that explores the work of the world's award winning directors. If you love great films, and love learning about them, then this class is for you. The class examines the trends and highlights in the history of film while participants relax in a casual screening room environment.
The Seminar meets at 7:00 PM on Tuesday evenings. Admission: LCC Community Education registration or $3 at the door. Participants enrolled in the 2010 summer session may take this extended series free.
Thomas Blank, a former Hollywood film and television director, hosts the seminar. An engaging discussion follows each screening.
Aug 3: "Five Easy Pieces" Director: Bob Rafelson (1970) With Jack Nicholson and Karen Black. (98 min.) Jack Nicholson plays a concert pianist who has dropped out of the music world to work in the oil fields. When his father falls ill, he brings his waitress girlfriend to Spokane to visit his upper class family. Several sequences were filmed in Oregon, and the most famous, the "chicken sandwich" scene was filmed in Eugene at the Denny's near the 30th Street I-5 onramp..
Aug 10: "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" Director: Robert Altman (1971) With Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. (120 min.) A gambler makes a business partnership with a prostitute in a mining camp in the Old West. Many of Altman's signature techniques are present, including overlapping and improvised dialogue. The photography by Vilmos Zsigmond is spectacular, and the songs of Leonard Cohen set a perfect, off-center mood.
Aug. 17: "American Graffiti" Director: George Lucas (1973) With Richard Dreyfess and Ron Howard. (120 min.) Two recent high school grads spend a final night cruising their hometown streets before leaving for college. The soundtrack features memorable rock and roll hits from the period. Look for Harrison Ford and Suzanne Somers in small parts. This movie's success made "Star Wars" possible.
Aug 24: "Chinatown" Director: Roman Polanski (1974) With Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. (130 min.) A detective stumbles on a plot involving the Los Angeles water supply, but that doesn't tell us that "Chinatown" is a magnificent "neo-noir" that muddies its feet with murder, incest, and civic corruption. The success of this film made Nicholson decide, in order to avoid type casting, to never again play a detective. This was the last film Polanski directed in America.
Aug 31: "Network" Director: Sidney Lumet (1976) With William Holden, Peter Finch and Faye Dunaway. (121 min.) A television network uses the mental illness of its anchorman to boost ratings. It was considered satiric that a network would turn over its news department to the entertainment division. Sadly, that's seems to be the way the whole industry decided to operate. Academy Awards for Peter Finch (Best Actor, Faye Dunaway (Best Actress) and Beatrice Strait (Best Supporting Actress). Best Screenplay to Paddy Chayefsky.
“You haven’t seen a film until you’ve talked about it.” Thomas Blank

"One Step Big Shot: Portraits by Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant", continues through September 5, 2010. Behind a Polaroid camera Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant probed innumerable acquaintances and strangers in the process of crafting their art—Warhol’s paintings and screenprints of people and objects and Van Sant’s characters in film. Warhol’s portraits were transformed into iconic Pop images. Van Sant’s Polaroid pictures helped him cast characters for his films. In reflection these one-step photographs became indelible images.
